There’s a lot to look forward to in Midnight, the newest expansion for World of Warcraft.

Following its cinematic reveal at gamescom Opening Night Live earlier in the year, Blizzard gave us a deep dive as to what we can expect when the expansion launches early next year.

Every spec in the game is seeing its talent build reworked from the ground up in an effort to make the game more accessible. One of the biggest issues with retail World of Warcraft is «button bloat,» referring to the fact that there are far too many buttons you need to press to play your character optimally. Call me old, but it’s something I feel in certain specs; I don’t know what I’d do without my MMO mouse and its side buttons.

There’s also the introduction of the new Prey system, three different raids at launch, and the general excitement of new zones to explore, especially since we’re returning some familiar locations in Eversong Woods, the Ghostlands, and the Sunwell.

Most importantly, we’re finally seeing the release of player housing this December for those who have pre-ordered Midnight. For some, though, the most important feature in Midnight isn’t something being added to the game, but rather somethingbeing removed.

Over the past few years, Blizzard has spoken in depth about the dilemma that comes with the reliance on addons to help with the game’s endgame encounters.

Addons have become popular because of the complexities of certain encounters, but at the same time, Blizzard has been making fights more complex because of the prevalence of addons. It’s a real double-edged sword, and one that Blizzard has decided to finally engage with in the newest World of Warcraft expansion.

Truth be told, they’ve already planted the seeds in the past with Dragonflight, introducing a new UI overhaul. With Midnight, they’re taking things one step further and addressing in-combat addons, doing what they can to essentially break them. This means that they won’t be seen as something that’s mandatory and ties into their overall goals of improving accessibility for players.

One addon that’s caught in the crossfire is, arguably, the most popular: WeakAuras. Most people know WeakAuras as the addon that helps play the game for you, as in it tells you what to prepare for during a boss encounter. Yes, that’s an incredibly reductive explanation, but it’s true.

Truth be told, these have been in use for decades; back in my day, it was Deadly Boss Mods, but WeakAuras are a much better version.

With the news that Blizzard is axing combat addons in World of Warcraft, WeakAuras announced that they won’t be releasing a version for Midnight.

They reference an interview with Ion Hazzikostas, Game Director for World of Warcraft, where he discussed how they were aware of the possible consequences associated with such drastic changes as they relate to addons.

And I think that some of that gets back to us knowing that we need to really ease into this, that any world where we just kind of rip the band-aid off, and say alright have fun. We are in a new world. As opposed to, you know building up more built-in functionality, starting to have clearer visuals, simplify some mechanics.[…]

«Well, the plan now is to rip the band-aid off, so that does not leave us with much choice other than closing shop,» the WeakAuras team said.

It’s unfortunate, not just because of how useful they were in combat, but more importantly, how beneficial they were outside of it. WeakAuras aren’t just a combat addon, but also offer massive quality of life and, ironically, accessibility features for players. Those are now in danger of being gone from the game, which is antithetical to Blizzard’s desire to make the World of Warcraft experience more open and accessible in Midnight.

Blizzard has since given an update on the matter, saying they’ll make some changes to ensure that their new addon logic will only happen during an active raid encounter or Mythic+ run. While the future of WeakAuras remains in doubt, Blizzard’s decision to quickly reverse its stance is encouraging. However, one question remains: if WeakAura packs that help make the game more accessible are no longer a thing, who will fill the void, and will it be Blizzard itself?
