Winter Burrow tips and tricks
Now, Winter Burrow is all about surviving and there are plenty of small tips and tricks to learn to make your time in-game that bit easier. Of course, you’ll naturally find your own way of doing things as the intrepid little mouse, but knowing these few things may be handy for you:
- Expand inventory size as soon as possible — The more you can carry, the easier it’ll be to stay out in exploring for longer. Also, having a bigger inventory size means you can collect more resources on your adventure before needing to offload them at your Burrow.
- Focus on unlocking all Flint tools — You will need to progress through certain parts of the story to get the Flint tools, but they are worth it as they are the strongest tools in-game and they’ll allow you to go pretty much anywhere. At the time of writing, there’s a Flint Axe, Flint Pickaxe and Flint Shovel to collect.
- Don’t ignore your hunger — Going hungry is one of the top two most dangerous things that can happen while you’re away from your Burrow. Keep an eye on your hunger meter in the bottom left corner of your screen! There are plenty of cooking recipes you can use to satiate your hunger as well as give you instant helpful boosts when you consume them. Also, if you don’t have any meals in your pockets, then foraging for things like Blueberries, Blackberries, and Hazelnuts (among other things) can turn into quick snacks to give you enough energy to get home.
- Держите тепло! — Getting cold is the other most dangerous ting that can happen while you’re away from your Burrow. Keep an eye on your warmth meter in the lower left corner of the screen. Once this is around halfway down, you’ll notice frost patterns appear around the edge of your screen and they’ll gradually become stronger the colder you get. As pretty as these are to look at, they are a clear warning sign that you need to find a way to get warm quickly!
- Pick up multiple resources at once — Tired of button mashing or repeatedly clicking when you find a grand pile of Blackberries or Pebbles? Well, good news, you don’t have to! Walk up to the pile of resources and you’ll get command prompts soon appear on your screen. Use the indicated command to ‘take all’ and you’ll collect a large chunk of them in one go.
- Unlock pathways as soon as you can — As you progress through the story and get better tools, you’ll be able to clear more obstacles to open up more pathways. Most areas are connected in some way with multiple different entrances and exits, so opening them all up gives you more routes to follow. Also, clearing obstacles can open up new pathways to hidden areas with goodies waiting to be found!
- Explore the dark parts of Shadow Pines — Shadow Pines is the area north of Bufo’s home and, after doing a few things for Gnawtusk, they’ll give you a lantern. Once you have this, you can safely explore the dark areas of Shadow Pines — and I highly recommend doing this. These shaded areas hide plenty of resources to find, Abanadoned Backpacks to raid and heartfelt or even heartbreaking little moments to experience.
- Unlock and use the basement — The basement will take a bit of patience to unlock and repair the stairs to, but it’s worth it. As you rummage around the wilderness you’ll pick up various Mushroom seeds which you can then plant in your basement. Though it doesn’t seem like there’s mush-room (I’m not sorry, that’s funny), with some careful planning and placement you can plant plenty down here to save yourself some time scurrying about outside looking for specific species.
- Unlock upstairs — You might have to wait for a bit to do this, but once the opportunity arises I recommend unlocking the upstairs part of your burrow as soon as you can. This will give you an entirely empty floor for you to decorate with your furniture as you’d like to. One, this gives you room to play around with the layout as much as you want to and two, this means that the oven and woodwork bench won’t be cluttered up. At first, I put all my furniture downstairs and it soon became a mess to try to access these areas, so learn from my mistakes and spend a bit of time getting upstairs sorted out.
