Sandfall Interactive’s debut title, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, is one of the biggest games of the year. Even with Silksong on the horizon, I’d still wager it’s the favorite to win a majority of Game of the Year awards this season.
While Sandfall has teased additional content for the game in the past, they’ve never been definitive about their future plans. Jennifer Svedberg-Yen, lead writer for the game, said in April that the team is still trying to process they’re overwhelming success.
Sandfall COO François Meurisse also hinted that the team already has ideas on what they’re looking to tackle next.
Here we are, four months later, and Sandfall is talking about some more concrete plans for the future of not just Expedition 33, but Clair Obscur as well.
Sandfall Interactive Says That This Is Not The End Of The Clair Obscur Franchise

In an interview with Mr. MattyPlays on YouTube, Expedition 33 creative director Guillaume Broche was asked about whether or not the team feels like Clair Obscur can become a franchise. Based on Broche’s answer, I’d say that’s a resounding yes.
Broche also says that, in terms of living up to the expectations from Expedition 33, he admits that when he’s writing sequels (yes, he said sequels), he’s subconsciously comparing things to Expedition 33, but acknowledges that he can’t keep doing that.
So, not only does that mean Clair Obscur itself is a franchise, but Broche also says he’s planning sequels. Now, this doesn’t mean we’re 100% guaranteed to get several sequels to the game, but remember that Sanfall said they want Clair Obscur to become a franchise. Honestly, it’s something they’ve set up quite well with the in-game universe.
Story spoilers below for Expedition 33

The game’s third act hints heavily at not only the war between the Painters and the Writers, but also at a seemingly numerous other canvases from other Painters, each of which, I’m sure, has its own independent story, themes, conflicts, and aesthetics, as seen within Expedition 33.
Mr. Matty Plays notices this as well, in that it could be set up in a similar manner to how Final Fantasy works, where most sequels have little to do with their predecessors. For the most part, Expedition 33’s ending wrapped things up nicely with the story of the Dessendre family. There could be a sequel set up, though, that delves further into their backstory, including the death of Verso. Or we could explore the conflict between the Painters and the Writers further. Who knows; we could even focus on a different family or group of Painters.
Wherever we go next, I’ll be waiting with bated breath.
