I’m the kind of player who will always defend that Bully is as good as any GTA or even Red Dead Redemption, and should get the same amount of love and recognition from the community.

However, it looks like some moments of the development of the game were not as fun as us playing it – and who is saying that is a developer who literally worked on it.

In a recent chat with the Retro Gamers magazine (thanks, GamesRadar), Эндрю Вуд, who worked as an environment artist on Bully, looked back at that time with “mixed memories of love-hate”, since crunching was a big part of the final months of development.

Crunch was not exactly uncommon for Rockstar Games at that time (and most of the gaming studios out there, unfortunately), but Wood’s statements include tons of stress and exhaustion, a lot of pressure, working every single day of the week, and people having mental breakdowns.

“The memories of it are love-hate. It was a fun, weird, hellish, chaotic, awesome time”, Andrew says. “I reflect back fondly on the people and the times and the crazy things we did after hours, but then I think about the stress. […] There were constant internal conflicts due to the stress of always being at work. A couple of people had mental breakdowns. They snapped. It was difficult to work in that kind of environment, but I knew that Bully was going to be worth it in the end, so I stuck it out”.

By the time Bully was about to hit store shelves around the world, most developers were even revoking their lunch and dinner breaks. “They actually catered food into the office because they didn’t want us leaving! It started to feel like a prison for a lot of people. […] It was brutal at times, especially near the end. We were working seven days a week, averaging 18-hour days. It just burned people out”.

Despite Andrew’s instincts being right about Bully becoming something special, these working conditions are no good for anyone – and are quite similar to Red Dead Redemption 2’s development, which many developers complained about as an exhausting working journey of “100-hour weeks”.

Fortunately, the most recent reports from Rockstar’s backstage are that their studios had a big cultural shift and have improved their working conditions, meaning that its upcoming release – the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto 6 – is being created in a better environment.
