Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has stood in its own league as 2025’s Game of the Year contender, with very little coming anywhere to rivaling it so far. On top of a well-written, deeply emotional and complex story, the game also featured very solid and engaging gameplay.
Another key element that helped elevate Expedition 33 from a unique French fantasy JRPG into a beloved masterpiece is the game’s soundtrack.
Composed largely by Lorien Testard, the OST features a combination of classical orchestral elements with modern production quality and a range of serene, memorable vocals — but to try to describe such a work in mere writing is quite futile. Just go and listen to it if you haven’t already.
While the score may be widely acclaimed among gamers, it seems that Laced Records, who own the soundtrack rights, are pushing for the OST’s consideration at the esteemed Grammy Awards.
Award Season Beckons
In a post on X, the record label put forward the OST as a whole for Best Score Soundtrack for Video Games and Other Interactive Media, while also nominating the individual song «Lumiere» (feat. Alice Duport-Percier) for Best Song Written For Visual Media.
Its fair to say that both suggestions would be worthy nominees and indeed worthy winners in their respective categories, particularly considering the lack of competition within the video game industry this year.
The story of how Lorien Testard came to be involved in Clair Obscur’s development is quite interesting in itself. During development, Game Director Guillaume Broche was scouring some obscur internet forums in search of some video game music to trial when he came across Testard’s talents.
The two exchanged emails and concept art, as well as early demo tracks for the game, before bringing in Testard to the studio for some official recording. It seems that it was a match made in heaven as Testard bought into the project and its story immediately, while Broche recognized that he had a supreme musical savant at his disposal.
