As the face of the entire Nintendo brand, Mario’s games are generally pretty multinational. Barring a few exceptions over the years, any Mario game that’s been released in Japan also made its way west. One of those few exceptions is a particular SNES game that has never seen an American release, at least until now.
Yesterday, Nintendo released a promo video on its YouTube channel showing off three new additions to its library of SNES games for Switch Online subscribers. These games include Fatal Fury Special, the original Bubsy game for some reason, and the highlight of the trio, Mario & Wario. Originally released in 1993, Mario & Wario was never brought west, which is weird, because the game’s text was already completely in English. Whatever the reason, Mario & Wario simply went unacknowledged for all these years, aside from a tiny cameo in a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Melee, but now, American players can finally try it out for themselves.
Mario & Wario is designed to be played with mouse controls
Mario & Wario is one of the few SNES games designed specifically to be used with the SNES Mouse peripheral, much like Mario Paint. This explains why Nintendo waited until now to bring it west, as mouse controls with a Joy-Con 2 are one of the Switch 2’s big features.
Rather than a platformer, Mario & Wario is more akin to a PC puzzle game. Wario, in his typical behavior, drops a bucket or some similar object onto Mario’s head, leaving him to wander aimlessly and out of your control. As the fairy Wanda, you can add or remove platforms, move obstacles, and knock away enemies in Mario’s path. You need to create a safe path for him to reach Luigi at the end of the level to clear it.
Mario & Wario is available to play now on the Switch 2 via the Super Nintendo — Nintendo Classics app, which you can download and play for free with an active Switch Online subscription. Remember, it’s mouse controls only, so you can’t play this one on a regular Switch.
