How to begin The Purification and Of Secret and Shadow
To begin The Purification, you’ll need to meet a couple of prerequisites — first you’ll have needed to have beaten the previous quest, Permanent Retirement.
Once that’s done, you’ll start a subquest called ‘Of Secret and Shadow’. Unlike some of the previous subquests that simply direct you to a Dark Brotherhood NPC for the next contract, this one is more extensive, with objectives that lead into the main quest, The Purification.

Once you’ve finished Permanent Retirement, speak to Ocheeva and she’ll hand you a letter from a very important person — read it to learn of your next objective via the quest Of Secret and Shadow.

Lucien Lachance — the Dark Brotherhood member who first invited you to the guild — has requested you to meet him in Fort Farragut «with all haste».
It’s Lucien from which you’ll be able to start the quest, The Purification. Whenever you are ready, make your way to Fort Farragut which will now be marked on your map.
Where to find Fort Farragut
Форт Фаррагут is located slightly north-west of Cheydinhal making it a fairly short trip to reach if travelling from Cheydinhal.

There are no defences or enemies on the exterior, but as Lucien mentioned in his letter, there will be a few «denizens» you’ll have to overcome on the inside.
This doesn’t just include enemies, but an array of traps throughout Fort Farragut. With that in mind, it’s handy to have a save or two to fall back on in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

Once you’re inside the fort, it’ll be time to search for Lucien Lachance.
Where to find Lucien Lachance in Fort Farragut
Finding Lucien Lachance within Fort Farragut requires a little bit of a trek, one with some caution as you navigate a variety of enemies and traps along the way.
To provide a high-level look at this area and the route to reach Lucien, we’ve provided a couple of images below that showcases the area map.

Fort Farragut is fairly expansive overall, so feel free to explore as much as you like along the way, but in this guide we’ll be focusing primarily on the path you’ll take to find Lucien.
The main enemy type you’ll be fighting are skeletal ‘Темные Хранители‘ (like the one you’ve seen in the Dark Brotherhood Sanctuary), with dangers such as proximity-based, ловушки для стрел that surprise you from the walls, to растяжки that cause cave-ins. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled as you move through this area, and especially so if you venture off the beaten path.
You’ll first enter into a corridor that’ll lead down a set of stairs to a gate — pull the nearby дамба открыть ворота.

This takes you into a fairly open room with a couple of Dark Guardians — one on the other side, and one wielding a bow on the platform above.
Dispatch of them however you feel with melee and ranged attacks of your choosing.

After they’re down, you then want to head through the Old Wooden Door on the right side of the room (from where you entered) which you’ll need to open with a Lockpick.
You’ll move into a torch-lit cave which will have another Dark Guardian in, before leading you out to a corridor.

You’ll want to be wary of this next area since, when you get to the end of the corridor nearby the fire, you’ll be able to spot a натяжные along the path into the next room.
Thankfully, you can interact with it when approaching slowly to manually activate the trap before continuing — this will activate the trap, but then allow you to move through safely without being crushed by the now-fallen debris.

Move through the corridor, past the fallen debris and past a second tripwire (which appears to trigger the same trap but from the other side).
You’ll find a Dark Guardian in this area, skulking around the pillar near the blue fire brazier — defeat them before continuing.
It’s worth noting, there is a set of stairs in this area but it only takes you back to the first room, and so you’ll be taking the path that you’ve not yet moved through.

This pathway will take you through a cave with a hole in the ground you’ll need to jump over — perhaps keep a save here in case you do miss the jump.
If you do happen to fall down the hole, you’ll land on some spikes which you’ll want to quickly move off before they damage you further. Getting back up from here though — thankfully — is just a simple path back. All you’ll need to do is head up the sloped path to return to the cave you were in, except now on the other side of the hole. How convenient!

Keep moving forward to a split in the path between two openings either side of a torchlight. You’ll want to head through the left path, as the one on the right will only lead you to a trap — you’ll be able to completely avoid this when taking the other path.

Taking the left path leads you into another corridor with a Dark Guardian moving slowly up ahead, past two braziers lit up with blue flames.
Whether you engage with the Guardian or not is up to you, but it’s best to stay undetected for the time being, and you’ll want to be wary of the trap you can activate with a pressure plate on the floor that triggers maces to drop down and swing towards you. You can avoid this simply by hugging the walls as you move down this corridor.
Moving past that, so long as you stayed undetected, you’re likely to find the Dark Guardian will have been killed by an arrow wall trap — the same one you would’ve encountered if you had instead took the right pathway a few moments ago!

You’ll spot another large gate similar to the one you found in the entrance up ahead, and it’s in here where you’ll be able to spot Lucien.
To open the gate, all you need to do is interact with the nearby lever and the gate will open, allowing you to enter and speak with Lucien.

How to complete Of Secret and Shadow and start The Purification
Once you approach Lucien, you’ll be able to engage in a conversartion in which he’ll explain to you the full situation, why you have been summoned here by him, and the necessary actions to continue.

It’s through this conversation that you learn a shocking revelation: there is a traitor amongst the brotherhood.
As a result of this, «to test both your skill and your loyalty to Sithis», Lucien wants you to enact the ‘Purification’, where you are given free reign to break the tenets of the guild, and sent to assassinate all seven menbers of the Dark Brotherhood in the Cheydinhal Sanctuary.
To set you on your way, Lucien provides you with a Отравленное яблоко и еще один Свиток призыва for Rufio — whom you might remember as the first target you eliminated for the brotherhood.

Feel free to speak to Lucien further about various topics after the main conversation, but it’s from this point forward that The Purification quest officially begins.
Use the ladder near Lucien to exit Fort Farragut and from here, it’s time to begin to plan out your path to assassinate the Dark Brotherhood allies you’ve come to consider friends (probably).

Optional: Complete all remaining side quests for the Dark Brotherhood
Since this quest has you hunting all of the Dark Brotherhood members you’ve been working with, once a member is eliminated, their associated side quests won’t be something you’re able to complete anymore.
This includes quests such as The Shadowscale Renegade и Вечная Тьма, with more information on the latter than can be found in our guide here.

Make sure to complete these and speak to any of the members before you make the move to assassinate them, or even keep an extra save for this current point in the questline so that you’re always able to go back if you choose to change your mind at a later date.
Once you’re ready to continue with the Purification, read on to learn about the ways in which we handled eliminating each of these targets.
How to eliminate all seven Dark Brotherhood targets
In a similar way to the Whodunit? quest, there are a large number of approaches to this quest, and the location of the targets will change as time goes on.
I found first and foremost, using the Wait feature to be especially useful in this quest to isolate the various targets be it on their own or in an entirely different location. Not just that, but it didn’t seem like any of the targets will run away too much, nor are alerted to any combat happening in nearby rooms.

Whilst stealth has been a large part of the questline up until this point, there are essentially no ways in which you can be punished for your approach to this quest, with no bonus objectives or rewards. This allows you to enforce whatever measures you’d like.
In many ways, it’s a quest that offers up a lot of experimentation, so with a few save files at the ready, you’re able to try all manner of approaches. Be it more tactical and stealthy, or with extreme force in open combat, the choice is yours. That said, you will have to be wary that members of the Brotherhood will of course fight back when you hit them, and may well band together if one of them sees you attacking another.
With that in mind, here’s a few extra high level tips and suggestions before you continue:
- Be sure to stock up on a few зелья здоровья or Restoration spells in case you need them.
- Lean into some of the Dark Brotherhood skills and gear you’ve acquired along the way to boost your stats.
- Be sure to experiment with the Wait feature, and fast travel away if there seems to be any bugs.
- Utilise all tools at your disposal, including the созывать и Отравленное яблоко Lucien gives you.
- Keep save files handy in case you need to re-load and try again.
- Adjust the difficulty, or try alternate methods and weapons to take out the targets.

Once you’re ready to begin the hunt, here are the seven targets you’ll be assassinating as part of The Purification:
- Очеева
- Висенте Вальтиери
- Antoinetta Marie
- Gogron gro-Bolmog
- Телендрил
- М’раадж-Дар
- Teinaava
As this is a fairly extensive list of targets to defeat, each of which have gear and abilities that make them more challenging than most of the targets up to this point, below is information on each of the targets covering the order in which I defeated them, information on how they fight, and where and how I isolated them.
Телендрил
The first target I ended up going after was Telaendril, primarily because she was the only member outside of the Sanctuary. At around midday, I initially found her in the village, behind Mach-Na’s Books and near a well that leads into the Mages Guild.
As I learned, Telaendril is a traveler, and so often you’ll be able to find her outside of the Sanctuary, which can help greatly in taking her down.

My initial attempts to eliminate her quickly whilst she was in the village of Cheydinhal failed due to her larger health value, and the fact that in broad daylight, it attracted local guards thus making it near impossible to get away with, even if I was hidden at the time of the attack.
If you find yourself in a similar situation, you might find it best to instead wait a few more hours, or alternatively, look to take down another one of the targets in the meantime.

The latter is what I ultimately went with, investigating the Sanctuary and managing to isolate and kill Vicente in the process. We delve into more info on Vicente in the next section, but after he was down, I waited till late evening the next day — around 10-11pm — to find Telaendril’s location has changed.
In doing so, I learned that she will often take trips outside of Cheydinhal which is definitely well worth using to your advantage. This behaviour is dependent on both the time and day, but if you can line it up like I did, you’ll have one less target to worry about assassinating inside of the Sanctuary.

Thanks to the marker she’ll have assigned to her as part of this quest, you can easily track her positioning, so be sure to refer to your map from time to time to check where your targets are. If you spot a red or green marker outside of Cheydinhal with this quest tracked, it’s bound to be her.
You might run into some trouble trying to fight her outside if there are any patrolling guards nearby, but also there are other hazards that can be used against her — such as bandits, or even using Pickpocketing to place the Poisoned Apple on her. It might take some time, but at some point after, she’ll likely eat the apple and die that way — just be careful you aren’t caught when doing this.

For me, the showdown with her was out in the open world, in the Heartlands near the Upper Niben river, and she ultimately ended up being the second member I killed. It wasn’t the most efficient method, having me roaming the hills and roads for a few minutes to catch up to her, but it’s an approach that worked nonetheless.
Her main attacks are with her bow and arrows, and it seems like a strong melee weapon was a solid choice to fight her with, whilst dodging the arrows she shoots.

Висенте Вальтиери
Timed correctly, Vicente can be found in his room at the Sanctuary, reading a book and alone, making him an incredibly simple kill that doesn’t require all too much setup.

I was still using Sufferthorn, and after shutting the door, I snuck up behind him and launched an attack, receieving the Sneak Attack damage multiplier before quickly finishing him off with a few more attacks whilst he was in the process of standing back up.

If he’s not in a placement like this or there are others around, be sure to use the Wait feature to lead to a time where you’re able to isolate him in a similar way.
None of the others were in the area and so weren’t alerted to the attack. You’re free to loot him like all the other targets if you so choose, but after he’s down, you can move onto the next target you’re hunting.
Очеева
At around 4-5pm, I found Ocheeva in a similar way to Vicente, isolated in her quarters with no other members of the brotherhood around, giving a great opportunity to assassinate her.

For as true as this was, she had unfortunately completely bugged out for me, whereby she didn’t fight back at all, and instead just spoke lines of dialogue whilst I whittled her health away.

Whilst it ended up being a fairly short-lived encounter for me, she looks to be one you’re able to isolate fairly conveniantly if you’re around at the right time. This had been the case somewhat regularly when accepting quests too, and it was only here and there I’d find her amongst others.
When she does fight back, it’s with very close-range attacks using her dagger, and so keeping some distance and perhaps a long range weapon might be of use in case things do break into more open combat.
As a heads up, it was around the same point that Ocheeva bugged out that things got even weirder as I encountered Gogron who seemed to be half T-posing (!?) as he moved through the corridor.

In case you run into any of the same issues during this quest and want to try to resolve them, I found that fast-travelling to another location and then returning back to the Sanctuary seemed to fix the problem.
I went to a location quite a far distance away, but it ultimately might not matter — see what works for you. Additionally, you could also try waiting a bit of time after fast travelling, though that’s up to you. For me, the fast travel there and back worked.
Teinaava
Continuing the hunt, at около 4:30 утра, I found three of the members all gathered in the Living Quarters, with Teinaava alone in the main hub of the brotherhood’s Sanctuary — where you arrive when entering via the Well, or Abandoned House.

Similarly to Vicente, they were reading a book and unaware entirely of my prescence making them a fairly easy target.
There is the Dark Guardian patrolling nearby, so I waited until their patrol path took them out of the main room before attacking Teinaava.

They come prepared to battle with a sword, but with the Sufferthorn and a solid sneak attack, you should hopefully have a good head start on them.
The same goes for if the Dark Guardian attacks, be sure to have a shield at the ready to block attacks if needs be, and use any health potions and restoration magic to help, but much like the ones you battled in Fort Farragut, they don’t have too much health.
М’раадж-Дар
Waiting in the Sanctuary until около 7 утра and heading into the Жилые кварталы, I discovered Antoinetta and Gogron on their way out into the area where I’d killed Teinaava.

This then left M’raaj-Dar completely isolated on his own, opening up the perfect opportunity to land a sneak attack on them whilst they are enjoying a nice morning cuppa (sorry).
Being a Mage, they retaliated with Restoration spells to heal themselves alongside a couple of attacks, including an ice-based spell that slowed movement, but after a barrage of hits, they went down with little trouble.

There was the rat, Schemer roaming around the room, but they didn’t seem to attack back, allowing us to exit back into the main hall of the Sanctuary to hunt our final two targets.
Antoinetta Marie and Gogron gro-Bolmog
From here, only two remained: Antoinetta Marie and Gogron gro-Bolmog.

It was at this moment where I’d recommend summoning the Ghost of Rufio, but only cast it when you’re absolutely ready since it will only last for 120 seconds.
Stall Antoinetta in the hall and let Gogron head off into the Training Room, then summon Rufio’s Ghost. If you now attack Antoinetta, your summoned spirit will fight alongside you to defeat her. Should the Dark Guardian discovers this, they will support Antoinetta and attack you, so be aware of that.

It seemed like at some point, even though you can’t damage it, I must’ve attacked the Ghost of Rufio too much since he started attacking me. However, if a similar thing happens to you, you can actually use it to your advantage.
Whether or not the summon is attacking you though, head into the Training Room where Gogron went.
If like me, your summon has turned on you, it seems like this will lead to Gogron coming to your defence, fighting your summon for the remainder of its time which will encourage the summon to fight back and damage Gogron.
Should the Dark Guardian still be alive, this gives you the chance to focus on defeating that, and despite it originally being a sort of guard for the brotherhood’s sanctuary, Gogron didn’t seem to view me attacking it as an offence, leading to him continuing on like nothing was going on whilst I was mid-battle.

This allowed me to defeat the Dark Guardian whilst my summon had weakened Gogron, allowing me to take the fight to him whilst he was completely unaware, having not perceived me as a threat. He’ll of course retaliate with his enchanted Battle-Axe, but with a solid Sneak Attack and some weakening thanks to your summon, you should be able to deal with him in a fairly short time.

In the event that Gogron doesn’t leave the room, you can either try and wait till another opportunity arises where either character can be isolated, or you can attempt to take both Gogron and Antoinetta on at the same time.
Be wary of the Dark Guardian again here if they’re about, but be sure to use the Rufio summon to your advantage, and keep your health stocked up with potions and magic. Maybe bring a more combat-centric weapon and sturdy set of armour to help if the fight proves too challenging.
As mentioned earlier, there are many different solutions and possibilities as for how this quest can be carried out — whether you go all in on combat, or try and isolate each member and approach from more of a stealthy perspective like we’ve discussed above.
One other possible option you could try is getting one of the members to attack you, then luring them outside into a group of soldiers that will defend you, allowing you to use this behaviour against the other members.

Learning what information you can and then using it against the members may also prove useful — such as Vicente’s distaste for Garlic which you can utilise against him.
Whatever the order and methods you employed, after eliminating the final member of the Dark Brotherhood, you’ll be ready to return to Lucien in Fort Farragut and report to him about the completion of your task.
How to complete The Purification and earn Shadowmere and the Silencer rank
Once you’re back in Fort Farragut — you’ll be able to enter quickly thanks to the hidden trapdoor you exited out of the fort from previously — you can speak to Lucien about the completion of your contract.

Finishing this quest will introduce you to a new set of contracts that Lucien himself will enlist to you. These will be recovered and kicked off via ‘Dead Drops’ you’ll find in the world that open up their respective quests and objectives.
On top of a new beginning for your Dark Brotherhood climb, you’ll be rewarded handsomely, with a new horse, Тенемир, and reaching the rank of Глушитель — earning you the Silencer, Dark Brotherhood achievement in the process.

With this quest complete and a new beginning for you as part of the Dark Brotherhood, you’ll be ready to jump into the following quest, Affairs of a Wizard.
