Mario Tennis Fever has 38 characters in total.
Announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct on Friday, Mario Tennis Fever is the next entry in the beloved sports series and features the biggest roster ever with 38 characters. Launching early next year, Mario Tennis Fever lets you use Fever Rackets that let you freeze your competitor’s sport and enflame them.

Mario Tennis Fever is launching exclusively for the Nintendo Switch 2 on February 12, 2026. It will include a new mechanic, including Fever Rackets. They each provide different abilities to the characters of Mario Tennis Fever, and there will be 30 of them in total. This new system will likely make the game more interesting than the disappointing Wii U entry. The rackets we know about so far include:

- Sparks flames on the other side of the court, roasting your foes.
- Ice Racket
- Creates a pool of ice on the other side of the court, making your opponent slip.
- Mini Mushroom Racket
- When used, it throws multiple mini mushrooms at the player. If one of them come into contact, they grow small.
- Shadow Racket
- A shadow version of your character appears, acting as a second player on the field for a limited time.
There is a fever meter that needs to grow in order to use these special abilities. Nintendo also confirmed a few of the characters of the confirmed 38-person roster. They are the ing:

Mario Tennis Fever Includes a Story Mode
Mario Tennis Fever will let you dive into multiple modes, including a story mode. It includes a Tournament mode. There is a Trial Tower that has you raise to the top by completing different objectives. The Nintendo Direct shows the Bullet Bill Return Challenge, which has your return balls transform into Bullet Bills. You’ll need to make 20 returns to succeed. The Mix It Up mode features all manner of rules, including a Waluigi Pinball-take on the sport of Tennis.
Mario Tennis Fever, as you may expect, will have Online modes. You can choose between Casual play with customizable rules and Ranked matches for online glory. You can also play Mario Tennis Fever like Wii Sports, swinging the Joy-Con like a racket in the Swing Mode.
Mario Tennis Fever is a Switch 2 exclusive.
The story mode features multiple beloved Mario characters that turn into babies. After encountering monsters on a remote island, Mario, Luigi, Peach, Wario, and Waluigi get transformed into babies. Donkey Kong somehow remains the same. The Adventure mode has the babies learn how to play Tennis once more now that their skills are gone. In mini-games, they have to defeat the monsters to return to normal. Hopefully, there will be a demo for Mario Tennis Fever like Aces had.
Friday’s Nintendo Direct also revealed a teaser trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie that Minions studio Illumination and Nintendo are making together. Additionally, Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be available in a package on the Nintendo Switch on October 2. Multiple amiibo featuring Mario and Rosalina will be released later in 2026. Rosalina’s book from the Super Mario Galaxy games will be available in physical form as well. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 edition too.
