Here’s how to expand your inventory using the Backpack in Hytale.

The standard inventory, which has 49 slots, is great as is, but more space to hoard items without needing to return to base is always good.
First, however, you’ll need to unlock the Backpack, and later on, you’ll need to upgrade it twice to really make the most of it. To help with that, here’s our guide on how to get and upgrade the Backpack in Hytale.

To unlock the Backpack in Hytale, you’ll first need to craft a Workbench. You’ll then find the Backpack recipe in the ‘Tinkering tab’ of the Workbench; it requires eight Leather and eight Iron Ingots altogether.
After having crafted the Backpack recipe, right-click while the Backpack is in your hand. This will officially unlock the Backpack for you! At first, it will have just nine slots.
Rather than acting as an equipable backpack that you’ll see your character wearing, and can take off and put down if needed, Hytale’s backpack acts as an additional storage upgrade more than anything. At the time of writing, your default inventory – including your hotbar – has 49 slots in total.
After unlocking the backpack, open your inventory and look at the backpack icon to the right of your character model (shown above); this is your backpack storage, which you can offload your inventory to if needed. At first, the backpack will have just nine slots, but after acquiring the Backpack Upgrade 1 and Backpack Upgrade 2, this is increased to 27 slots.
Below, we’ll delve into how you can upgrade your backpack in Hytale.
How to upgrade the Backpack in Hytale
To upgrade the storage capacity of your Backpack in Hytale, you’ll need to upgrade the Workbench to Tier 2 using 30 Copper Ingots, 20 Iron Ingots, and 20 Linen Scraps.
Once that’s done, the Backpack Upgrade 1 recipe becomes available in the ‘Tinkering’ tab of the Workbench. It’ll set you back the following materials:
- 40 обрезков ткани Cindercloth

This upgrade will then add an additional nine slots to your Backpack’s storage, bringing your storage up to a total of 18 slots. A second Backpack upgrade also awaits, but it might be a while before you get your hands on it.
To unlock Backpack Upgrade 2, you’ll need to collect and unlock 100 Memories with the Forgotten Temple first. If you’re yet to visit the Forgotten Temple – and you definitely should! – head to one of the vortex icons on your map and go through the portal downstairs.
You’ll then arrive at the Forgotten Temple. Go straight ahead and interact with the statue to unlock Memories; you can now peruse the ones you have already unlocked and have yet to unlock, and can look at the rewards for unlocking Memories.
As you’ll see, only once you unlock 100 Memories will the Backpack Upgrade 2 recipe become available at the Workbench.
Once you finally unlock the recipe, the Backpack Upgrade 2 is also found under the ‘Tinkering’ tab of the Workbench and will require the following materials:
- 1x Voidheart
- 8 слитков адамантита
- 16x Storm Leather
This upgrade gives your Backpack an additional nine slots, bringing your Backpack’s capacity up to a total of 27 slots. That said, the issue with the second Backpack upgrade is that it requires Storm Leather, an item that is incredibly difficult to get in Hytale right now.
Storm Leather requires you to collect Storm Hide and then dry it out using the Tanning Rack, but at the time of writing, it appears that this particular resource cannot be found in Hytale’s Adventure mode.
If you are dead set on acquiring the second Backpack Upgrade, the only workaround for it without going straight into Creative Mode is to use console commands. By typing the following command into the console (as an admin in your world/server), you’ll be able to spawn one Storm Hide at a time, which you can then go about turning into Storm Leather using a Tanning Rack:
- /spawnitem ingredient_hide_storm
