We’re all going to play a lot of games in our lifetime, many of them good, and many of them not so good. But sometimes, you come across a game that you know is a once in a generation experience.
Some of these games are so excellent that they end up being the defining game of their respective genre. So, whenever you try to play other games of the same genre, you always go back and compare it to that “one” title because you know it can never be topped.
Here is a rundown of games that, at least for me, set the standards that others still try and fail to match.
10 Guitar Hero 3: Legends Of Rock
Rhythm Game Genre
Back in the mid-2000s when plastic instruments dominated the market, Guitar Hero hit its peak with the third entry in the series, Legends Of Rock. Featuring some of the most iconic classic rock and heavy metal songs you could think of, no other game in the franchise came .
In fact, out of all the Guitar Hero games I’ve played, none of them have matched the highs that this game gave me. Nothing will ever beat completing Career Mode for the first time and playing through DragonForce’s “Through The Fire And Flames” after a job well done.
Shame that the Guitar Hero franchise isn’t around anymore. But with Fortnite Festival still kicking and former Guitar Hero devs reuniting for a new game, here’s hoping the OG is ready for another comeback.

Single-player FPS
BioShock is a game that can fit into many genres, such as a first-person shooter or a role-playing game. Much like the System Shock series, in which BioShock is a spiritual successor, it can also fit into the genre of immersive sim, though its simulation elements are a bit looser than the former.
The complex and intriguing story forces the player to make some hard choices involving the fates of not only the Little Sisters, but the entire underwater city of Rapture. Player choice also affects gameplay, where the combination of FPS weapons and superhuman powers gives you many different possibilities for interacting with enemies.

Soulslike (And Open World) Genre
I’ve played my fair share of soulslike games, and many of them follow a similar formula. Elden Ring dared to be different, and that daring is what ultimately led to its success.
Taking the intensely difficult gameplay of the genre and expanding it into the open world was the main reason this game stood out. It allowed those familiar with soulslike games to experience something fresh, while also appealing to those who prefer more mainstream open world elements.
There will no doubt be several other soulslike and open-world games that try to copy Elden Ring down the line, but none will ever surpass the original.

Interactive Drama Genre
До Сильный дождь, I had never played an interactive genre before. And after playing several others over the years, I have yet to find a better one.
Not only did I enjoy trying to unravel the mystery of the Origami Killer, I also loved changing the lives of its four playable characters and seeing how all of their individual stories came together.
This was also the game that made me tolerate quick-time events more, since the game is full of them.

6 Resident Evil 2 Ремейк
Survival Horror Genre
Resident Evil 2 was a defining title for the survival horror genre back in the late 90s. So it’s crazy that in 2019, Capcom thought, “Hey, let’s just create the best survival horror game, but again,” with the Resident Evil 2 переделать.
From the moment the game starts, the tension of fighting off hordes of zombies with limited ammo and resources never lets up. And don’t even get me started on Mr. X. That man truly is relentless, and is 90% of why I find this game so scary.
As good as many of the recent Обитель зла games and remakes have been, Resident Evil 2 is still the gold standard.
5 Super Smash Bros. Ближний бой
Fighting Game Genre
Все Super Smash Bros. games have something to offer. But the second entry in the franchise, Рукопашная, is the one I often compare the others to.
And once you play the game, it’s not hard to see why. The gameplay balances casual and competitive play very well, the roster is strong without feeling too bloated, and there are so many modes to play that you’ll never get bored.
Maybe it’s my nostalgia kicking in, but I believe Super Smash Bros. Melee is not only the best in the series, but also a defining moment within the fighting game genre as it made people take platform fighters seriously. After all, it’s still being played at major tournaments till this day.

Action Game Genre
Что можно сказать о Последний из нас that hasn’t already been said before? Like many, I was immediately hooked on Joel and Ellie’s tragic journey through an infected and violent world. And I’ve stuck with them through every remaster and adaptation ever since.
But the story is only half of why we love this game. The gameplay is the perfect blend of survival horror and action, and exploring every inch of the world to find new weapons and secrets is even better.
It just goes to show that however many times I replay Последний из нас, I always enjoy it. No other action game has come to matching it.

Adventure Game Genre
Я никогда не думал, что Легенда о Zelda series would be able to replicate the freedom and adventure that made the 1986 original so memorable until Дыхание дикой природы came around. And I’m still waiting for another game to top it.
Breath Of The Wild (и Tears of the Kingdom) takes the open world formula established by other games and goes crazy, allowing you to literally do anything you want in any order without any restrictions. All of this is made even better by combat that is both challenging and rewarding, making you constantly watch your back at every turn.
To this day, I still haven’t fully discovered every hidden secret in Дыхание дикой природы. So good on Nintendo for giving us an open world that truly feels like an adventure to explore.

Racing Game Genre
В течение долгого времени, Mario Kart 8 was my go-to comfort game, since Nintendo just kept adding more to it over the years. But as great as that content was, it was the gameplay that kept me coming back.
I don’t think any other game in the series, or any other racer for that matter, can match the perfectly balanced smoothness and silliness of Mario Kart 8. The new and returning tracks are some of the best in the series, the roster is stacked with personal favorites of mine, and jumping into online races was quick and easy.
It’s no wonder Nintendo kept updating the game for nearly a decade. It’s without a doubt the best racing game you could ever play.

3D Platformer Genre
Есть много Марио games you can talk about when mentioning genre-defining experiences. But for me, I’m going with my favorite Wii game of all time: Super Mario Galaxy.
Because what’s not to love about this game? Incredible level design; fun bosses; tons of replayability; the introduction of Rosalina, my favorite Марио princess, to the series. Super Mario Galaxy has it all. I’ve spent hours trying to collect all the stars in the game, and I’d gladly do it again.
Марио is always going in new and exciting directions, but nothing will ever beat when he first blasts off into space.
