The success of Vampire Survivors contributed to the rise of the auto-shooter genre.

These games normally involve roguelike mechanics where you become stronger as you play, allowing you to survive a seemingly endless onslaught of enemies. Over the years, we’ve seen a handful of twists on the genre, including this year’s excellent Ball x Pit.

Not only does it, at times, feel like a chaotic game of pinball as you take down waves of enemies, but there are additional mechanics at play, including base building. It all results in a cohesive package that’s incredibly hard to put down. Let’s say, though, that you do find yourself able to put it down, but you’re looking for similar games to scratch that itch. We’ve got you covered: here are ten of the best games that look, feel, or play like the critically acclaimed Ball x Pit.

10 Megabonk

I have to be honest about something: the biggest reason I haven’t put too much into Ball x Pit is because Megabonk and its wide array of characters exists.

To give you an idea of how committed I am, after setting up the formatting for the copy here, I had the urge to do a Megabonk run. Or two. Or five…

Anyway, I digress; if you’re someone who enjoys the actual roguelike runs of Ball x Pit, eliminating hordes of enemies, and becoming more powerful, but aren’t the biggest fan of the city builder side of things, Megabonk is here for you. It’s a fantastic evolution of the auto-shooter genre, where expanding into the 3D space over 2D opens up so many possibilities.

Plus, the puns are still making me laugh today.

Of course, there would be no Megabonk, or maybe even no Ball x Pit, without Vampire Survivors.

Released in 2022, Vampire Survivors took the world by storm, capturing the feel of old-school arcade shoot ’em ups with the modern elements of a roguelike and Soulslike. The result is a seemingly simple, yet surprisingly deep and challenging game where you have one task: survive.

Of course, in typical roguelike fashion, as you progress and level up, you’ll earn new abilities, unlock new heroes, and increase the firepower at your disposal to handle the endless waves of the undead.

Vampire Suvirvor’s success not only helped launch the popularity of the auto-shooter genre, but also contributed to the popularity of several games I’ll be discussing today, and garnered plenty of acclaim and recognition during awards season.

8 Deep Rock Galactic: Выживший

Given the massive popularity of the auto-shooter trend, you knew that at some point developers were going to cash in on it.

Enter Deep Rock Galactic, the popular co-op game that’s all about working together to mine minerals, fight aliens, and complete missions. That’s all fine and dandy, but what if it were a Vampire Survivors clone instead? Wonder no more, because we have Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor.

Unlike the main game, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor is strictly a single-player affair, but it manages to maintain nearly everything you know and love about Deep Rock Galactic. One thing that stands out here is the art style; it feels like most of these auto-shooter games, like Ball x Pit, go for the old-school retro-inspired look. Instead, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor has a bright, colorful, and inviting vibe.

Combined with impressively deep gameplay systems that pay respect to its inspiration and source material, you have the recipe for an auto-shooter that does much more than just take advantage of the genre’s popularity. Newcomers to the game may need a little guidance, but it’s a real blast.

7 Halls of Torment

You Got Diablo In My Auto-Shooter!

Vampire Survivors is absurdly popular. Do you know what else is absurdly popular? Diablo. I mean, people actively play three different versions of Diablo today. So what if you take the two together and make it one game? Congratulations, you have Halls of Torment.

While Halls of Torment won’t stand out with its visual style (it uses the isometric camera Diablo is known for but it honestly looks pretty similar to Vampire Survivors), one place where it stands out is how it deals with upgrades during your run. You’ll pick up your base modifiers to increase stats, but also equipment and spells as if you’re, you know, playing Diablo.

Is this Megabonk’s Tomes with extra steps? Possibly, but the fact that Halls of Torment gives players three different ways to upgrade their hero for each run adds more combinations to help things feel fresh. It’s the very best of an action RPG, bullet heaven, and auto-shooter genres rolled into one package. Plus, it looks like the beloved Diablo series!

One of the things that helps Ball x Pit stand out is the vital role base building has when it comes into play. It’s something that similar titles like Megabonk and Vampire Survivors lack.

Cult of the Lamb has you covered, incorporating the city builder/town management gameplay alongside its roguelike elements.

With these two mechanics combined, Cult of the Lamb and Ball x Pit’s gameplay loops are incredibly similar, even if they play entirely differently. Ball x Pit’s runs have an old-school feel to them. Meanwhile, Cult of the Lamb feels like a more modern indie game, incorporating familiar action and gameplay with a unique twist. Don’t let those differences deter you, though, especially given Cult of the Lamb’s wide, dedicated following.

Both games also happen to be published by Devolver Digital, so that’s another thing the two have in common!

What if you took everything you know and love about a roguelike experience and turned it into a card game?

Slay The Spire is all about building and fine-tuning your deck as you make your way through a tower and battling your enemies. It’s somewhat similar to Ball x Pit’s basebuilding; instead of building your base to set up success on future runs, you’re building your deck.

There are few things as satisfying as removing your chaff and having every card (or every Ball x Pit fusion) be exactly what you need. It brings out memories of drafting a Magic: The Gathering Limited deck, where you’re at the mercy of what’s in a booster pack and being passed to you. Setting yourself up for success with future packs and watching your plan fall into place is one of the best feelings I’ve ever had in a game, tabletop or otherwise.

Slay The Spire takes that feeling and puts it into a roguelike video game. The euphoria when I have a perfectly constructed deck is virtually unmatched in the video game world.

Speaking of card games, we can’t talk about Slay the Spire without discussing the utterly engaging Balatro. Sure, the two games play entirely differently, but they still share the same DNA that makes them not only similar to each other but also to Ball x Pit.

One of the possible drawbacks of these games, including Ball x Pit, is that there’s normally a learning curve. You need to learn how the game plays, the mechanics, optimal items and upgrades, the works. Balatro instead requires basic knowledge of poker hands, all of which are normally available online. Heck, casinos will give you a list of poker hands while you’re playing it.

Now, you’ll also need a willingness to break the rules, and that’s what makes Balatro so special. Its ability to take a familiar, accessible game and put a variety of spins on it is what leads to so many marathon sessions. Oh, and it absolutely helps, too, that the game runs smoothly on mobile devices.

There aren’t many roguelikes as addictive as Balatro, a game so successful that it even saw Game of the Year nominations last year.

3 CloverPit

Чувствую себя счастливчиком?

And since we’re on the subject of poker and gambling, it seems like the right time to bring up another indie hit from this year: CloverPit.

On the surface, CloverPit is trading poker for slots, borrowing from the accessibility and familiarity of that genre, along with its engaging gameplay. Then, of course, there’s the randomness that comes inherently from slots. Sure, you’re able to manipulate the slots to some degree, and that’s where the strategy comes into play.

The thing that makes CloverPit truly special is that everyone will find something different to get out of the game, all while still finding joy. You can sit back, relax, pull the lever, and enjoy a game of slots. Or, you can min-max to your heart’s desire and just find out how deep the rabbit hole goes.

2 Бротато

Как дела, бро

Games Like Ball x Pit

What if, instead of spending your time after a run in Ball x Pit building base and setting up your character, you did that during the run? That’s the hook of getting started with Brotato, aside from being a potato that can wield six weapons. That’s right: a potato that wields six weapons, a gimmick powerful enough that it’s the perfect impulse buy, especially at its $5 price tag on Steam.

Now, I’m not saying that it’s a mechanic as deep as Ball x Pit’s basebuilding, which, honestly, in itself could be fleshed out to become its own game. But the beauty of Brotato is that you don’t need to unlock the best skills or weapons. They’re all available from the very start and can be purchased after completing a wave with the money you’ve earned.

My favorite part of Ball x Pit is the runs themselves, combining the very best of so many iconic genres into pure, unadulterated, chaotic fun. It’s a similar feeling I have with Brotato. Each wave brings a new onslaught of enemies, ready to meet the carnage and chaos of my weapons. The gameplay may look and feel different, but the result is the same: staying up late at night, constantly telling yourself, «just one more run, I swear.»

Enter…If You Dare

Games Like Ball x Pit

One of my favorite things about Ball x Pit, as well as the autoshooter genre as a whole, is the inspiration from old-school shoot ’em ups that stole my quarters at the local arcade.

Enter The Gungeon may not be an auto battler, but it’s most certainly inspired by those games. Either that or the game was developed by a bunch of cruel developers.

Despite being a celebration of all things video games, complete with humor, style, and an impressive arsenal of weapons, Enter the Gungeon is a challenging experience that will push you to your limits with challenging encounters. There’s no base building or optimal builds to carry you here. It’s all about sitting down, focusing, and getting good.

It evokes the very best of the bullet hell genre, something Ball x Pit does as well. This means I sure did die a lot while playing Enter the Gungeon, but hey, I had fun playing it, and that’s all that matters.
