For better or worse, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles has updated the 1997 classic to modern standards. Unfortunately, this means keeping some of its hardest boss fights intact, including the infamous one on the roof of Riovanes Castle.
Riovanes Castle is notorious for potentially soft-locking players, at least in the original PS1 release, as it’s impossible to leave after completing the first phase. The castle’s three phases contain the two hardest boss fights in the game, ones that end many a player’s journey.
The second phase boss fight against Wiegraf and Belias is brutal, because it starts as a one-on-one fight before switching to an incredibly hard battle against a demon who loves to spam powerful summoning spells.
The Wiegraf fight is difficult, but at least the player is in control of the battle, in the sense that you can win it through level grinding and smart planning.
The fight that follows it, however, is dreadful. The player faces Marquis Elmdore and two assassins, who would be annoying enough on their own, but there’s someone far worse in the fight.
How To Beat Riovanes Castle Roof In Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

The Riovanes Castle Roof has Rapha as a guest character. Not only is she fragile, but her main spell attack has a random chance of missing entirely. If she dies, you lose the fight, regardless of whether there’s someone standing next to her with a Phoenix Down.
Let’s not beat around the bush: Riovanes Castle Roof is the single worst fight in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles. It heavily depends on luck, or rather, the AI of a phenomenally stupid and unreliable character who must be kept alive, yet has all the survival instincts of a lemming.
There are ways to tilt the odds in your favor. First thing first: make Ramza one of the faster jobs (preferably Ninja, though Thief or Monk will also do) and equip him with the Green Beret. This will drastically increase his Speed and make it more likely that you’ll go before the enemy. Try to do this with the other party members, as it can be tricky to get a turn in before Rapha is turned into paste. For the rest of the party, ensure that you have people with long-range healing abilities.
Ramza’s position at the start of the battle is irrelevant, as he’ll be teleported next to Rapha’s side at the start of the fight. From the starting position, put your best healer on the far left of the blue squares, as this will be st to Rapha’s position and will let you get to her side quicker.
Defeat One Of The Enemies As Soon As Possible

The goal of this fight is to drop one of the three enemies to critical health, as this will cause them to run. Simply pick whoever is st and wail on them, but there are a few things to consider, mainly that they all have First Strike, meaning melee attacks are extremely risky, as they can be countered straight away.
Monks and Chemists are ideal for this fight, as the former can use Aurablast/Shockwave and Chakra, while the latter has guns and potions. Mustadio’s Seal Arm can be used to Disable the Assassins, potentially buying more turns, while Agrias’ holy sword deals a ton of damage from a distance.
Chances are, this fight will take a few retries, as it does have a luck component. Just hope for a run where Rapha runs to the party’s side, as this will make it a lot easier to heal her.
