Elden Ring Nightreign matchmaking rules explained
First things first, there’s some Elden Ring Nightreign matchmaking rules you need to know before you can start playing:
- Have Expedition Type set to ‘Multiplayer’ in the ‘Matchmaking Settings’ of the Expedition menu.
- You must have beaten the Tricephalos Expedition to matchmake with players who’ve unlocked other Night Lords.
- Though you can work around this by performing specific party invites with friends and players on the same platform as you.
- If a player currently has a Shifting Earth event active, you must have unlocked that event to matchmake with them. You don’t have to be experiencing this specific Shifting Earth event or any other, but you must have unlocked this specific event.
- If you have a character remembrance active, then you can not matchmake with other players who also have an active remembrance.
- You can get around this by inviting players using your specific platform party system. If you do this then the player who began the matchmaking process will have their remembrance objective on the map, but other players won’t be able to progress theirs.
- Understand the crossplay and crossgeneration rules for Nightreign.
Keep in mind that, if you end up playing with players who’ve progressed further in Nightreign compared to you, it may lead you to experiencing some spoilers!
How to matchmaking with other players in Elden Ring Nightreign
If you’re happy to matchmake with anyone, then all you need to do is pick the Night Lord you wish to fight and select ‘Commence Expedition’. You’ll then be matched with two other players who meet the same requirements as you.

How to matchmaking with friends in Elden Ring Nightreign
There’s two ways which you can matchmake with friends in Elden Ring Nightreign.
No matter which method you pick though, it’s important to note that being the person to select ‘Invite Members’ makes you the leader of the invited players, which means it’s your job to set the goals of the Expedition.
You may also witness some spoilers if you matchmake with players who are further ahead in Nightreign’s storyline compared to you.
Platform-specific Invite System

When it comes to using a Multiplayer Password, everyone must enter the same password in the ‘Multiplayer Password’ box of the ‘Matchmaking Settings’ screen. Once that’s achieved, someone must select ‘Invite Members’ before starting the Expedition. If done correctly, everyone should join the party.
In our experience, it’s best to have an eight character password (the maximum number of characters) and have Cross-Region matchmaking set to ‘Perform Matchmaking’ to ensure everyone can join correctly.
After creating any password, it’s worth deciding which ‘No. of password players’ option you wish to use. There are two options — ‘Three players’ and ‘Two players’.
‘Three players’ means that only the people using your password can join the team. ‘Two players’, meanwhile, requires two team members to input the password with the third player being selected randomly. It’s a very useful setting if you only have one other friend who plays Nightreign, but still wish to play together.
We highly recommend ensuring everyone’s option for this setting matches before attempting to start an Expedition to ensure matchmaking works correctly.
Using a Group Password is a very similar process — make sure you’ve all entered the password, used the maximum number of characters (eight) and ideally have it in the same slot. Just keep in mind that using a Group Password can make it more likely to see bloodstains, phantoms and other effects created by other players using the same password.
Either way, just like with the other methods, the Expedition will begin when all of the other players have joined.
How to turn on Cross-Region matchmaking in Elden Ring Nightreign
If you’re having trouble with matchmaking in Elden Ring Nightreign, then it’s worth turning on Cross-Region play. This will allow you to matchmake with players from across the world, rather than just those in your home region.
To turn on Cross-Region play, you need to:
