In 2022, Sony Interactive Entertainment purchased Bungie, the studio best known for the original Halo trilogy and the Destiny franchise, for $3.6 billion.
It was a major deal, especially considering it happened around the same time that Microsoft was acquiring studios left and right. This upward revision and positive year-to-year growth are a testament to the strength of Sony’s other properties. Their financial results also revealed that they have now shipped over 84.2 million PS5 units, more than every Xbox console ever. They also announced that Ghost of Yotei has sold over 3.3 million copies, putting it on pace to outsell its predecessor, Ghost of Tsushima.
Despite all that success, the company’s operating income has seen a 13% decrease year-over-year, with Sony pointing to two factors. First is the «recording of expenses resulting from a correction in the amount of certain previously capitalized development costs.» The second is Bungie.
As for their 2025 forecast revision, their targeted operating income remains unchanged, despite the market uncertainties of today, including those related to Bungie, capitalized development costs, and tariffs.
You’d like to think that Bungie is getting ready to dig itself out of a hole and turn a corner, especially since they’ve been hard at work on another title aside from Destiny 2. Unfortunately, Marathon might have an even bigger stigma surrounding it than Destiny 2. Former Bungie CEO Pete Parsons stepped down earlier this year, following the game’s controversial reception, development issues, and delay. Destiny 2 GM and Chief Development Officer Justin Truman took over the role of CEO, saying that we’ll see more information on Destiny 2 and Marathon later this year.
Marathon did conduct a d technical test last month, but testers were under NDA, so don’t expect to see any information on how things went until Bungie is ready to share it.
