The following contains spoilers for DC vs. Vampires: World War V — Darkness and Light #1, now on sale from DC Comics.
As ДК против. Вампиры: Пятая мировая война proceeds, fans are witnessing one of the most savage Elseworlds ever. Batgirl’s vampire army has been relentless in asserting dominance throughout the world. Sure, they have established a truce with the remaining humans, but they have been sneaking around, killing people and cultivating blood farms to maintain the food chain. It compounds how deceitful and sinister the species is.
One side story, DC vs. Vampires: World War V — Darkness and Light, sheds light on Wonder Woman running her own side project. In the process, fans learn what happened to a key Justice Leaguer: Guy Gardner. Ironically, as much as he was despised by Batman, his role is connected to someone dear to Bruce’s heart: Alfred. As more of his story is revealed, fans learn Guy is a sadistic mentor with very harsh methods of creating new heroes to balance the tide.
What Happened to Guy Gardner In World War V?
Wonder Woman Ripped Guy In Half
When Wonder Woman kidnaps and raises Harper Row as her daughter, chaos breaks loose. Harper is broken over being turned and her brother, Cullen, suffering and dying. She ends up meeting Guy on a hunt after getting hungry. Guy uses his Green Lantern power to intimidate and burn the girl to death. Shockingly, Diana of Themyscira shows up and rips Guy in half, just like the Sentry did to Ares in Marvel’s Siege.

However, Guy didn’t die. He used his willpower to create constructs on his insides and in his brain. He turned into a machine of sorts, using animal constructs as well. For example, his insides ran on clock-like mechanics, pistons and pumps. It proved he had the artistic imagination of Kyle Rayner. As for his body, his lower-half was that of a snake, allowing him to slither around. Guy kept changing his form according to what the moment required.
The fluid Green Lantern had one twist, though. He couldn’t sleep or else he’d die. He was barely clinging to life, so he altered his brain and body with the ring. He didn’t need to eat, sleep or drink anymore, making him a different kind of metahuman. As a result, he grew cold, erratic and lacked compassion and empathy.
Who Did Guy Gardner Train in World War V?
Guy Trained Josh and Alfred the Butler To Kill Vampires

Guy trained Josh, the son of the Weather Wizard, to be a vampire slayer like Buffy. Josh found Alfred as well. Remember, DC vs. Vampires’ Alfred became a Green Lantern to stop Batgirl. He was left depressed after all the other Bat-Family members died.
Only Damian is alive as a hero, but he, too, has vampire blood. Thus, Alfred has tremendous rage to harness. Guy is reluctant at first, but he warms to the idea of getting revenge by shaping Alfred into a warrior.
Guy becomes the Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke Skywalker.
He trains Alfred rigorously and ruthlessly in many sessions. It’s so coincidental because avid readers would remember Bruce and Alfred didn’t have much of an affinity for Guy. Many colleagues hated and chided Guy in his stints with the Justice League International and Justice League. Batman even punched him out in what has become a famous meme.
This Guy, however, as dark as he is, is more mature. He recognizes the world needs revolutionaries. He might be a coward, but he’ll groom others to fight the bloodsuckers. He performs a harrowing test as a testament to this. He has Josh enter a vampire lair, knowing the odds are against the boy. This spurs Alfred into action. Wonder Woman arrives, however, to complicate things. Luckily, Guy gets Alfred to tap into his rage.
He defeats the vampires and cracks Diana away with a cricket bat, but is stunned to see Guy damaged and dying. Alfred flies away, knowing Diana is out there after fleeing. She and her cohorts still have to be killed. The kicker is, Guy faked his death. He tells Josh they have more work to do. It’s an enticing mystery that the future DC против вампиров issues will dive into.
Guy Gardner Can Help Fight DC vs. Vampires’ Darkseid
Guy Rebuilt His Body Using Green Lantern Willpower

There is a ton of creative potential to explore with Guy. Firstly, he can be inserted into the overarching current predicament. DC vs. Vampires’ Darkseid has descended upon the planet with his Parademons.
The forces of Apokolips want to raze the Earth because of the vampires murdering Mister Miracle and Darkseid’s granddaughter. Guy will have no choice but to enter the fray in the name of self-preservation. The Darkseid wave is spreading and they are rabid.
Apart from Josh, there is no telling which other secret legion Guy has trained. Guy could arrive with an assembled team akin to Nick Fury’s Secret Warriors in Siege. He does have a contingency plan for everything, plus this would rehabilitate his character. He has his ego and comedic side, but he may well be turned into a fearsome military leader using this approach.
In the mainstream DCU, Guy has been scared of Darkseid’s battalion. Now is a chance to show he is the Lantern they ought to fear. There aren’t many Lanterns left, so Guy can become that symbol to inspire hope and show that they must be remembered. Should he find Alfred, as awkward as it would be due to Guy’s duplicity, they would make a formidable team.
The human resistance has Supergirl and Mary Marvel as its heavy hitters, but most of its soldiers are grounded heroes or less-powerful vigilantes. Guy and Alfred would provide much-needed firepower. Guy alone can change the course of this new battle if he answers the rallying call.
Guy Gardner Can Help Finish Off Wonder Woman
Guy Can Seek Revenge and Unleash Green Lanter Power to Kill Diana

Alfred wants Diana dead, no matter what. Wonder Woman has been left battered and bruised in this new Darkseid war. It creates an opening for Alfred to go after her once he arrives on the scene. Guy, though, can also maximize this window of opportunity. This one-shot suggests he wants vengeance more than Alfred, especially due to what Diana has robbed him of. He is a mere shell of the man and mortal he once was.
She fractured his psyche, too. Therefore, it’s easy to envision Guy setting a trap for her. He can be petty and personal, after all. These are traits all versions of Guy have. It stands to reason that this variant won’t care about anything in the field once he finds her. He is quite obsessive and jealous, so it would be very organic if he pounces when she is weak, hurt and desperate. Wonder Woman is seeing the rebels cull her kind and the Apokoliptians making her queen cower.
She feels deflated and defeated, setting up that crowning moment of glory. Ultimately, it would bring Guy’s story full circle. Does Alfred deserve it more? Yes, but there has to be a reason DC против вампиров has positioned Diana and Guy in a feud дважды.
It’s more than a rivalry; it’s a macabre vendetta that Guy could well end once he learns where Diana is and how easy it would be to kill the merciless enforcer once and for all. Even if he has to steal Alfred’s glory, this kind of twisted teacher would do just that and reiterate how childish all Guys can be.
