Resident Evil has been a dominant, seemingly unbeatable force in the home console market since it debuted in the 1990s. It’s one of my all-time favorite franchises, and those high-quality console releases are a big part of the reason why.

One part of Resident Evil that doesn’t get nearly enough love, however, is its impressive roster of handheld games. It’s not a huge, exhaustive list of games, but what is on offer is pretty fantastic.

The survival horror genre has adapted rather well to handheld gaming over the years, and Resident Evil’s portable exploits have been just as spooky as their home console brethren.

Resident Evil’s handheld tales of horror have proven that you don’t need a beefy home console to scare a player. Some zombies and a group of desperate survivors will do just fine.

A Bit Of Dumb Fun

Best Resident Evil Handheld Games, Ranked

Part of what has made Resident Evil so distinct over the years is its focus on secondary, extra modes. One of the most compelling ones is Mercenaries, which feels more like a high-octane arcade game from the 1990s than a survival horror fright fest.

I’ve always loved the Mercenaries modes in each game, as it helps extend the life of the game, as well as adding some variety.

With Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, Capcom put the spotlight on this run-and-gun mini-game with its own, standalone title. It’s a great bit of mindless, dumb fun that evokes the same goofball energy of the mainline series.

It certainly lacks the broad, more concerted storylines you find in the mainline games, but it’s still a solid handheld Resident Evil experience.

It May Not Be Canon, But It Still Rocks

Best Resident Evil Handheld Games, Ranked

Resident Evil was so outrageously popular during the early 2000s that Capcom wanted it on anything. And I mean anything.

Enter Resident Evil Gaiden.

This bizarre, but ultimately entertaining, Game Boy Color spin-off is still not canon to the Resident Evil universe, and likely never will be. But even so, it’s still a nifty little survival horror adventure.

Gaiden makes some good use of the limited GBC hardware, as its inability to do anything to resembling a legitimate Resident Evil game forced developer M4 to get creative.

Combat unfolds in first-person, more like a classic RPG, and uses swing meters to deal damage. It’s not ideal, but it does have a decent bit of fun and charm to it.

Non-canon GBC spin-offs were all the rage during this era. Resident Evil Gaiden was just one in a long list, but it’s still worth playing today.

The Queen Returns

Resident Evil Revelations was developed alongside The Mercenaries 3D, where it was put into production for the 3DS. These days, playing Revelations means you can play it on nearly anything, but back in the day, this was heaven if you were a Resident Evil fan.

More specifically, if you’re like me and think that Capcom has done a massive disservice to Jill Valentine over the years, this is the game for you. Jill is the star of the show in Revelations.

It’s one of the most underrated games in the entire franchise. The over-the-shoulder gunplay is excellent, and the story feels like it has more in common with modern Resident Evil, as it focuses less on b-movie writing and more on genuine character interactions.

The Revelations series has been fantastic at keeping the series grounded in its horror roots, which is nothing but a good thing.

Portable Horror Refined

Best Resident Evil Handheld Games, Ranked

Unlike the first Revelations game, the sequel was not designed with a handheld in mind. Resident Evil Revelations 2 did launch on PS Vita, but you can also play it on most modern hardware today.

Revelations 2 put Claire Redfield back at the forefront, marking the first time she held a starring role since Code Veronica. It was well past time for her to return.

It rather easily outclasses the original Revelations game, as well. The combat feels sharper and the cutscenes are top-notch.

It’s episodic, almost bite-sized nature is also a benefit. It allows each character to feel meaningful, as they aren’t competing for the spotlight like they might in a mainline game.

1 Resident Evil: Deadly Silence

Wow, What A Mansion!

Best Resident Evil Handheld Games, Ranked

As a loud, proud owner of a Nintendo DS and a hardcore survival horror fan back in the day, no game was more exciting to me than Resident Evil: Deadly Silence.

It was one of my favorite games of all time, now as a portable experience. I couldn’t fathom how that was possible, and yet it was.

Deadly Silence is still such an impressive game to this day, and one of the best versions of the PS1 classic around.

The coolest features of Deadly Silence are Rebirth Mode, which includes newly arranged enemy layouts, and the multiplayer. Both of these are key parts of what makes Deadly Silence so cool, even all these years later.
