Apple TV+ Reaches Major, Unfortunate Milestone With Streaming Losses

Apple’s streaming service, Apple TV+, offers many popular shows with A-list names, such as Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Severance, и Медленные лошади, but per a new report from The Information, the platform is losing a stunning amount of money on streaming. The report, which cited two people close to the issues, stated that Apple is losing more than $1 billion per year on Apple TV+.

Apple TV+ launched in 2019 and since then the tech company has poured more than $5 billion per year on its streaming content. However, the report stated Apple cut its budget by about $500,000 in 2024. Apple did see $391 billion in annual revenue last year, so unlike other more traditional media companies, it is better able to handle the loss.

The streamer has reportedly poured $20 million into each episode of the second season of Северанс, but, per Apple Insider, the company did manage to earn $200 million in new subscribers. However, it should be noted that Netflix has spent upwards of $30 million per episode on Season 4 of its hit Незнакомые вещи.

Apple TV+’s popular Северанс, created by Dan Erickson and executive produced and directed by Ben Stiller, reportedly grew Apple TV+’s subscriber base by 2 million in February, per research and measurement firm Antenna. Разрыв is, to date, the most-watched show on the platform.

Per Deadline, in quarterly conference calls with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook speaks on the success of Apple TV+ shows and the awards they have won. However, Apple does not break down the streaming data as it is included in the company’s “Services” division, which is one of Apple’s fastest-growing divisions that includes Apple Music, Apple Arcade, iCloud, and others.

Ted Lasso Will Return

Another hit series for the streamer Тед лассо was recently confirmed to be coming back for a fourth season, two years after the third season finale. Jason Sudeikis will return to the titular role as the lovable soccer coach. The fourth season will come with a twist as Lasso will be coaching a women’s soccer team, and not AFC Richmond as he did in the first three seasons.

In an appearance on Jason and Travis Kelce’s Новые высоты podcast, Sudeikis confirmed the fourth season of the Emmy-winning show. When asked if it was coming back, Sudeikis said, “I think you can ask it, yeah. That’s what we’re writing, we’re writing Season 4 now. That’s the official word. Ted’s coaching, yeah, a women’s team. So there, that’s it,” he said. No word on when Season 4 will debut on Apple TV+.

Severance Concludes its Second Season

However, keen-eyed viewers will know that the show will drop at 6 p.m. PST/9 p.m. EST on March 20. The episode, titled «Cold Harbor,» will be a season-long one hour and 15 minutes, per Apple TV.
