Ever since Hollow Knight: Silksong launched in early September, it has sparked a heated discussion around accessibility and difficulty, especially since the massive hype around Команда Cherry’s metroidvania drew in plenty of newcomers who had no idea what kind of challenge they were walking into.
In response, developers released a quick patch to make a few encounters more forgiving, and even the modding scene entered the scene with inventive ways to ease the players’ suffering with some punishing mechanics and bosses.
But here’s a twist that no one was expecting: what we eventually got in the final version of the game was actually a toned-down version. That’s right, turns out Team Cherry actually decided to spare us from true pain, and Silksong was originally even harder during playtesting.
Team Cherry’s Playtesters Faced A Much Tougher Silksong

Speaking recently at the Dan Allen Gaming Podcast, Matt Trobbiani, who lent his voice to the amazing Trobbio, revealed a few secrets regarding the game’s development.
What stood out the most was that he also worked as a playtester for Silksong and actually was one of the first people ever to finish the game and experience the True Ending.
And if you managed to beat every boss by now, you should thank him, since most of Trobbiani’s tweaks as a playtester were nerfs to give them a little tuning. “It was almost entirely nerfs to the bosses that I got put in”, he explains. “It was much harder when I did it!”.
Sadly, he didn’t mention which bosses caused him trouble back then, but he hinted that some of them got some extra anticipatory frames to assist players’ reflexes.
Trobianni also made sure to ensure that Team Cherry paid a lot of attention to their feedback, since the game was always a little different each session, which shows how the team was looking for a challenging balance – and not an unfair one.
Finally, another interesting detail shared by the voice actor (and playtester, let’s not forget) confirms a long-standing fan theory: the developers had actually planned to shadow-drop Silksong once it was ready.
Trobbiani didn’t mention why that plan was ultimately scrapped, but it does line up perfectly with Team Cherry’s quiet, low-key approach to development and marketing.
