When it comes to casting voice roles for video games, nine times out of ten, you’ll see a blend of familiar names and hardworking randos rather than the biggest stars from the latest Hollywood blockbuster. You have to remember, games have only reached a place of equal standing to film and television in very recent years, and depending on who you ask, they’re not even there yet. Even so, whether through connections or an actor’s own interest, some games over the years have managed to bring some pretty sizable stars on board.
Obviously, you’re not going to find any games with an ensemble cast of the hottest actors in film right now. Frankly, I can’t think of a game developer or publisher who could even afford that. But there are plenty of games out there which have had a small handful of big names included in the main cast, whether for major, plot-relevant characters or simpler roles like named, recurring NPCs.

Keith David And “Rowdy” Roddy Piper

Saints Row: The Third set an interesting precedent for the steadily more-wacky series by including a random cameo from veteran actor Burt Reynolds as the mayor of Steelport. I guess that cameo went over pretty well, because in Saints Row 4, the devs got another couple of big names to portray themselves in an even stranger capacity: Keith David and “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
David has been with the series since the beginning, having portrayed the first game’s secondary character-turned-antagonist, Julius. In 4, though, he just plays himself, apparently having been hired on by the Saints’ Boss to be vice president. It’s an odd choice, but he totally kills it, so who’s complaining.
The choice to make David a major story character also served as a perfect excuse to throw Roddy Piper into the mix. As part of David’s simulated Hell, he’s locked in a loop of the fight scene from They Live, wherein Piper cleans his clock. Piper is also just playing himself, kilt included, and when asked what he was doing there in a Homie conversation, he jokingly replies, “I needed the money.”
7 Kingdom Hearts: Рождение во сне
Mark Hamill And Leonard Nimoy

Just about every Kingdom Hearts game has a degree of star power behind it by simple virtue of incorporating existing Disney characters. Jim Cummings still kills it as Pete, James Woods still cracks me up as Hades, and so on. However, I think what’s a little more interesting than that is having big-name actors play entirely original roles, and pivotal ones in the story at that.
Birth by Sleep takes the cake amongst its siblings for having both Mark Hamill and Leonard Nimoy amongst its cast. In a far cry from both his boyish Luke Skywalker and cackling Joker portrayals, Hamil is the stern and serious Master Eraqus. Honestly, you could replace Eraqus’ Keyblade with a lightsaber, and it’d still feel thematically appropriate.
The late, great Leonard Nimoy, meanwhile, portrayed Master Xehanort, the true form of the series’ overarching antagonist. His performance isn’t that different from his regular speaking voice, but he adds a very distinct sinister edge to it that really sells the character. Nimoy would portray Xehanort again in Dream Drop Distance, though unfortunately, he passed away before he could play the character in Kingdom Hearts 3.

Rami Malek And Peter Stormare

Until Dawn’s big selling point was that it was as to a genuine horror slasher movie as any game had ever gotten, with detailed character models and faces and film-worthy voice performances. At least in my humble opinion, two of the characters that stick out most for their performances also happen to be played by a couple of big Hollywood names.
One of the unfortunate youths trapped in the snowy mountain cabin, Josh Washington, is played by Rami Malek, a relatively younger but still well-known actor who’s been in film since the mid-2000s. Admittedly, I didn’t clock him back when Until Dawn released in 2015, but after I saw him kill it as Freddie Mercury in 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody, the pieces lined up.
Additionally, as the rather intimidating therapist Dr. Alan Hill, we have veteran actor Peter Stormare, who’s been in the biz since the late 70s. Stormare has had roles across the entire spectrum of genres and mediums, including TV, film, video games, and even music videos. He can do any tone, though he definitely knows how to scream in your face in Until Dawn.
5 Киберпанк 2077
Keanu Reeves And Idris Elba

I don’t think it’d be unreasonable to say that Cyberpunk 2077 wasn’t on a lot of peoples’ radar until they announced that Keanu Reeves would be playing the game’s deuteragonist, Johnny Silverhand. I know I wasn’t, but I guess if there’s any quick way to get a lot of eyes on your project, it’s to put Keanu Reeves in it. Hey, it worked on me.
In the base version of Cyberpunk 2077, Reeves is the only major star that springs to mind in the cast. However, with the addition of the Phantom Liberty DLC, we got another top-ranker in the mix: actor Idris Elba, portraying new character Solomon Reed. As with Reeves and Johnny, Elba also provided the face, model, and motion capture for Solomon, which means you get to see these two mega-stars next to each other in your game. Boy, if that doesn’t feel like gaming of the future.
Incidentally, I assume by complete coincidence, Reeves and Elba would appear side-by-side once again playing Shadow and Knuckles, respectively, in the third Sonic movie. This has nothing to do with Cyberpunk, it’s just the contrast of it makes me chuckle.
4 Смерть Стрендинг
Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, And Guillermo Del Toro

Hideo Kojima has reached this fascinating state of video game rock stardom where he can pretty much ask anyone he wants to star or cameo in one of his games, and they’ll do it happily. This is, presumably, how he managed to get actor Norman Reedus on board to take a journey with that funky fetus in Death Stranding.
Reedus is definitely the first actor you think of in the production, given he plays the game’s protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges. However, Kojima’s connections were able to get a few more big names onto the cast list. For instance, we have veteran Danish character actor Mads Mikkelsen providing the voice and motion capture for Cliff Unger, one of the game’s major antagonists.
Kojima’s connections are so powerful, he can get people who aren’t even actors on board with his games, as was the case when he got writer, producer, and director Guillermo del Toro to play medical researcher Dr. Rougeot Melillo, better known as Deadman. Deadman is one of the most consistently-appearing characters throughout the early hours of Death Stranding, so del Toro definitely had his work cut out for him, but he still did a great job.

Pedro Pascal, Sam Rockwell, And Rosario Dawson

While Dishonored 2’s primary cast consists of established voice actors, the secondary cast has quite a few big names floating about. Arguably, the most popular actor of the bunch, at least by current standards, is Pedro Pascal, who’s made waves in his portrayals as Joel in HBO’s The Last of Us and as the new face of Mister Fantastic. Pascal plays Paolo, the leader of the Howlers gang and either a potential ally or enemy, depending on how you play.
Additionally, playing Captain of the Watch Mortimer Ramsey, we have one of my favorite actors, Sam Rockwell. He’s not as big of a name as some of the others on this list, but he’s been in some excellent films like Galaxy Quest and The Way Way Back.
Finally, as Corvo and Emily’s ally Meagan Foster, we have Rosario Dawson, who’s been acting in film and television since the late 90s. She’s been in all kinds of pictures, from kids shows to film adaptations of stage plays like Rent, though she plays Meagan fairly seriously.
2 Фоллаут 3
Liam Neeson, Malcolm McDowell, And Ron Perlman

I remember, back when Fallout 3 came out, people joked about how Bethesda has a weird habit of getting big-name actors and then barely using them, such as with Patrick Stewart in Oblivion. The central reason for this is that the protagonist’s father, James, is portrayed by veteran actor Liam Neeson, but he’s only in about a fourth of the main storyline, going missing for a large portion of the game following the introduction.
Amusingly, though, Neeson isn’t the only case of this. The game’s famous introductory monologue, the whole “War Never Changes” thing, is performed by classically-trained actor Ron Perlman, well-known for his beautifully deep, ashy voice. That monologue is his only role in the game, though.
Similarly, one of the game’s major antagonists, Enclave President John Henry Eden, is portrayed by another veteran actor, Malcolm McDowell, whom you may remember as the main character of A Clockwork Orange. However, you only hear Eden on the radio, and then meet him in person exactly once, and in that one time, you can speech-check him into blowing himself up.

Almost Every Noteworthy Voice Actor In The Industry

If you tried to put a central X factor to determine a game’s overall star power, it might be the number and reputation of Hollywood actors that are present in it versus the number of normal industry voice actors. Of course, that logic is inherently flawed, because it implies voice actors don’t have star power of their own. Perhaps having a game with just regular faces from the industry wouldn’t be as noteworthy as one with a few Hollywood stars, but what if a game had the самый большой faces from the industry all in one place?
Date Everything, rather fittingly, has everyone. Seriously, name a voice actor that has worked in video games in a major capacity in the last 20 years or so, and they will be playing a character in this game. You name ‘em, we got ‘em; I’m talking Laura Bailey, Johnny Young Bosch, Troy Baker, Matt Mercer, even Sonic the Hedgehog himself, Roger Craig Smith.
If you absolutely had to focus on stars from television or film, Date Everything has those as well, from Dana Snyder to Dante Basco. We got Rufio in this game, dude. And his character is also named Dante!
