The modern gaming era is addicted to the open world formula. While this isn’t a bad thing, sometimes, things can get a little formulaic in these games, with everything from the gameplay to the quest design to the story starting to feel a little too samey.
Ghost of Yotei is the latest success in the genre, but in my opinion, it doesn’t really do anything all that novel. It’s an improvement on the formula from the first game in many ways, but the story is considerably weaker, with a tale that is strangely reminiscent of the recent Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which had a story that, quite frankly, I sleepwalked through.
It’s hard to live up to the expectations the first game set forth, but Ghost of Yotei still did an admirable job in capturing the essence of its era, and it’s still a great experience.
I think there are potentially even better open world games to come though, and soon. We’re going to check out a bunch of open world games with the chances to be even better than Ghost of Yotei.
10 Внешние миры 2
Galaxy Sized Expectations

Внешние миры 2 has a chance to be really special. While the first game was good, it felt on a considerably lower budget than one would expect from a studio like Obsidian and really felt small because of that.
Now, with many years past since the first game, Obsidian seems to be all-in with the sequel, emphasizing a darker tone, better RPG mechanics, gorgeous graphics, and a bigger scope that makes the experience feel all the more important in the process. They’ve also added a third-person mode, interesting mechanics known as Flaws that help or hurt your character in certain situations, and really fun stuff like the ability to play your character as a complete fool with the dialogue to boot.
It’s coming in late October 2025, and although this has already been a packed year, it’s still got a chance to be a standout title.
9 Басня
The Promised One

басня has forever been the series to promise the world, but deliver an island, and yet, there is a certain magic to this series that no other really has.
It’s a whimsical take on fantasy that feels distinctly its own, and it’s something that has stayed in fans of the series’ hearts for a long time since the series seemed to end in the early 2010s.
Now, we have the promise of a new generation of Fable games. Despite the absolutely horrid reveal trailer, there is reason to believe that in this day and age, Fable could finally deliver the whole experience it promised a long time ago.
The thought of growing from a child to an adult, with your actions shaping not only your character but the world around you, still stands strong. If it ever actually comes out, it could be the one we’ve been waiting for.
8 Готический ремейк
Potential To Relive A Classic

Gothic is an all-time RPG classic, and the remake is promising a fully new experience from the ground up with improved combat mechanics, modern graphics, and full voice acting for the characters.
Gothic is a niche series for sure, but those that have dug into it likely found a diamond in the rough. It has certain quirks and charms that you don’t really see in other games. It’s raw, janky, but undeniably compelling. From what we’ve seen of Gothic Remake so far, it’s got much sharper combat, solid voice acting, and it looks great in motion.
The scale is likely the same as the original, so expect plenty to explore, unique quests, interesting creatures to fight, and a much different flavor than any open world game out currently.
It’s hard to know just how good this one can be, but this is the year when the hardcore RPG has been embraced heavily, so maybe this one will pay off there as well.
7 Where Winds Meet
Incredible Potential

Where Winds Meet is promising some high-octane action, an exciting story, and a gorgeous world to traverse for free. I know, it sounds kind of too good to be true, but the potential is sky-high regardless. The gameplay we’ve seen has some incredibly slick-looking battles with animations that would suggest a massively skilled team behind the controls.
It’s a bit confusing just how this game will actually work when it releases in November 2025, as it’s set to release for all major platforms, PC and mobile as well.
It’s a first for the open world genre, so I’m not entirely sure how it will all play out, but with the promise of full co-op, a large open world to explore, and amazing combat and visuals, it’s hard to say that this isn’t easily one of the most intriguing open world games in quite some time. A great free-to-play open world game that isn’t full of gatcha elements? Sign me up.
6 Ведьмак 4
Король возвращается

The Witcher 4 is likely a while away from releasing, but it’s the successor to what many call the greatest game of all time, so there is just a little bit of hype for this one, to say the least. We’ll be playing as Ciri this time around, and while the story isn’t clear as of yet, it seems to be a direct sequel to Witcher 3, so expect Geralt to be around as well as other favorites from the series.
The idea of Ciri as a Witcher is an interesting one, as it goes against the lore setup for Witchers and will require some kind of nerfing of Ciri due to her otherworldly powers. It wouldn’t be the first time a game nerfs its hero after the opening minutes of a game, but it will still be interesting to see how they deal with it here.
The brief gameplay we’ve seen shows some absolutely stunning vistas, showing off what will likely be one of the most amazing-looking games ever made. It will be a tough wait, but when this finally comes out, no other game will be able to stand next to it.
5 The Blood Of Dawnwalker
Новая Кровь

Кровь Странника Зари has a veteran team that had a heavy hand in The Witcher series, so we know that whatever this game ends up being, we’re going to be eating good here. You play as a vampire, so with that comes rooftop hopping, phasing in and out of existence, and of course, drinking blood.
There is a unique system at play where you’re on a timer throughout the game, and the result of which may affect which ending you get. The vampire side of things will be fascinating though, as you’ll likely need to decide who to feed on, who to spare, and what the benefits and risks of each will have in store. The developers have said that your decisions will come back to haunt you, and we’re excited to see what exactly that might mean.
There is going to be swordplay, side quests, and tons of different kinds of enemies to fight. If the writing quality and gameplay design is even to what we got with The Witcher 3, I think it’s safe to say this is one of those games that may be on the short list for Game of the Year in 2026.
4 The Elder Scrolls VI
Waiting For The Legend To Return

The Elder Scrolls VI is a dream at this point. It exists in the future somewhere, where Bethesda has mastered the new creation engine and everything they got wrong in Starfield, they get right here.
It’s a game that is the true sequel to one of the most beloved games in history, Skyrim. The expectations are simply unmatchable, but when it finally releases, it could very well be that next landmark moment in gaming. We will be headed to a new land, with a new story in the endless Elder Scrolls series and a new character to boot.
One thing these games consistently falter in is the combat. If the years between releases allows Bethesda to finally get combat right while keeping the quality of their fascinating open worlds intact, then we might be cooking here. There is no confirmed release date, but rumors suggest that maybe mid 2027 could be the soonest we see this one.
3 Звездный гражданин
10 года в создании

Star Citizen has unlimited potential. It’s gorgeous looking, it’s got an incredible universe to explore, and it’s got a celebrity-ridden cast that promises a compelling story and full co-op as well.
It’s a game that many call a scam, fake, a lie, all of the above really. But in reality, it’s very much a game. It’s playable too, and although the full campaign isn’t ready yet, there is a 2026 release window for it. If this thing finally comes together, it will put the promises of Starfield, No Man’s Sky, and Elite Dangerous into a blender and give us the definitive, open world space exploration game.
While it’s been surrounded by controversy for a while now, the bones are there for something truly special. It’s hard to think that a game with this astronomical budget and clear talent behind it will fail, and while it’s possible, it is looking like all the promises it has made since entering the beta period might actually end up being real. If that’s the case, we’re looking at something incredibly special.
2 Багровая пустыня
The Game That Wants It All

Багровая пустыня is a game that seems to have every genre covered. You want Game of Thrones-style medieval intrigue? Check. You want science fiction weirdness with portals and crazy-looking structures? Check. You want mechs? Check. It’s wild. It’s a game that we still have so little detail about, but we are constantly seeing new mechanics, new characters, new landscapes, new rideable mounts; it’s almost overwhelming in scope.
The combat of Crimson Desert looks unreal, and from the demos playable at the various game shows, there is a near fighting game level depth to it, with options for fighting in a ton of different ways, from magic to melee and everywhere in between.
It’s got scale that I haven’t seen in a long time in terms of map size, and the visuals are an absolute feast for the eyes. I’m convinced at this point Crimson Desert is going to be one of the best games ever made, or an absolute dumpster fire of confused ideas and messy execution. There is no in between. I’m leaning towards the former, and we don’t have all that long to wait to find out as it launches in March 2026.
1 Grand Theft Auto VI
A Cultural Moment Is Upon Us

Grand Theft Auto VI has been long in the making, with over 12 years since the release of the last landmark title. This next entry in the series is taking place in Vice City, though instead of the ’80s, neon-dripped version we got in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, we’re in the modern era, following a Bonnie and Clyde-type duo.
Not a ton is known about the story, but I expect we’ll have a good dose of real-life parody, GTA’s signature biting commentary, comedy style, and whole lot of violence. It’ll be interesting to see what Rockstar allows this time around, as the world has gotten much more sensitive over certain content since the last title in the series.
The immersion is sure to be second to none in Grand Theft Auto VI, with a ton of enterable buildings, options to interact with the world and to get lost in a city that will be the biggest one Rockstar has ever crafted.
The gameplay is a bit more up in the air, but we’d bet there will be plenty of shootouts, heists, massive citywide chases, and everything else that has made GTA a household name in the modern world. While it got delayed to 2026, it’s not too far away as its coming in May 2026.
