The opening of a video game is as crucial to its ability to draw you in as it is in any other medium. So many video games have managed to hook me into their worlds with a brilliant introduction, but a few of them may have done it too well.

A lot of the best video games have amazing introduction scenes, but the level of quality and polish on display in a few of them has managed to be even better than the entire run time of full games.

A lot of these games had a profound, personal impact on me. And a big reason for that was due to their introductions, as many of them combine elements of mystery, emotional resonance and scale that are simply untouchable.

BioShock Infinite was one of a few games where I followed its development to an almost obsessive degree. I took part in forum discussion, had wonderful interactions with its developers and marked off each day towards the countdown to launch.

While every BioShock game has had excellent introduction scenes, the one in Infinite is easily one of the most incredible opening scenes of any video game ever. It packs more into the first five to ten minutes that some full games don’t get to in five hours.

Rowing up to the lighthouse, listening to the ongoing philosophy surrounding time travel and quantum physics, is topped only by the ascent to the top. It is overflowing with atmosphere and a permanent sense of dread, all of which culminates in the arrival at Columbia.

There’s more horror and suspense in this intro than some games achieve over their entire runtime. The rest of the game would be even better, but the intro is still absolutely mind-blowing.

There just wasn’t a video game like Half-Life in the 1990s. There wasn’t even a shooter like Half-Life during that time.

The genre was overstuffed with franchises that focused on pun-spouting meatheads. And while there’s nothing inherently wrong with being a pun-spouting meathead, the genre needed something different.

I was always struck by how mundane Half-Life’s intro is. You’re just a normal guy going to work, and that work day is so staggeringly dull while being outrageously exciting.

It’s the type of experience that could almost be its own game. Just living your life as a scientist, working on advanced technology and enjoying time with your co-workers.

I have played Half-Life through to completion roughly fifty times by this point, and I’m always amazed at how engrossing the introduction is each time.

The original Mass Effect opens with a rather unassuming energy, acting as an introduction to the world and player customization. That’s fine for what that game is, but Mass Effect 2 needed something bigger.

Every bit of it is absolute chaos. The Normandy is under attack, the crew is decimated and Commander Shephard is right in the middle of it.

This intro is especially jarring if you played Mass Effect 1 prior to this, as Shephard is put through the ringer. It hits super hard, and feels like its own self-contained story in a lot of ways.

It’s not often that a sequel starts this way, and the fragility of these characters is placed front and center. Mass Effect 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, and this stirring intro is one of the key reasons as to why that is.

It’s likely that the reason the introduction of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty is burned into my brain is because of the demo that came with Zone of the Enders.

I played that demo over and over again, becoming intimately familiar with the tanker that would make up the opening portion of the game. You could play that entire tanker section and feel like you experienced an entire game.

The level of detail is astounding, and the way you can interact with that ship is still impressive to this day. Shooting ice cubes and watching them melt on a bar is more impressive than some games that release even today.

Sons of Liberty’s prologue set the stage for what would become one of Hideo Kojima’s most complete works.

The 2016 reboot of Doom didn’t just revitalize this downtrodden IP. It proved that the FPS genre still had a lot of life left in it, and it is still my absolute favorite entry in the entire series.

A key reason for that is the opening sequence, which proved that Doom wasn’t just back. It was ready to dominate again.

Doom 3 was a great game, but it didn’t quite feel like the fast-paced, no-nonsense thrill ride that made me fall in love with the series.

Doom reset the focus on speed, killing demons and solidifying the Doomslayer as one of the most iconic heroes of all time.

The way it interrupts its own story in order to show how little it cares about the story, preferring the thrill of ripping and tearing, is brilliant.

At this point, as sad as it is, I’m more than ready for a third playthrough of Final Fantasy 7 Remake when it launches on Switch 2 in 2026.

One of the reasons for that is so I can experience the thrilling prologue once more. On the PS1, this innovative introduction broke new ground.

A big part of the Remake version is all about tickling your nostalgia bone, but doing so with some of the most incredible fidelity you can find today.

Storming the mako reactor, humming along to the music, listening to the chatter between the party, it’s still one of the best experiences I’ve had in a video game for the past decade.

Some games barely ever reach the level of accomplished design that this opening does.

After becoming hooked on the television show based on the Robert Kirkman comic, I found myself waiting for some sort of video game adaptation to fill the gaps between seasons.

I didn’t just get a video game. I got an entire secondary series to become addicted to.

The first episode of Telltale’s The Walking Dead game opens in such a fantastic way, as it uses escalating, rising tension through both foreground and background elements.

As Lee Everett finds himself being driven to jail, the world outside the police car is falling apart. Inside the car, things are quiet and introspective.

Your introduction to the world mirrors Lee’s, and this frightening mix of paranoia and serenity is still a winning combination.

Everyone who was playing video games back in the early 2010s remembers just how impactful the opening of The Last of Us was. It’s safe to say that many of us have experienced this tragic opening more times than we’ve wanted to.

It’s the type of game that is so infinitely playable, and through each subsequent playthrough, the opening prologue continues to floor me each time I play it.

The way it subtly transitions the player from Sarah’s POV to Joel’s is magnificent. You enter the world as someone who seems clueless, helpless even.

That opening plays a huge part in it, as it shows a mundane world being turned completely on its head with you right in the center of it.

The level of acting, writing and emotional impact is still second to none.

Hideo Kojima knows a thing or two about how to open a story, and his magnificent work on Death Stranding continues to showcase why.

Death Stranding is a world that believes in itself. For as bizarre and surreal as it is, this is a world that is honest about itself.

The opening shuffles you from one emotion to the next, laying the groundwork for one of the most fascinating video games of its generation.

The way Kojima uses music to guide you, then to frighten you and then to ease you, is incredible.

It culminates in one of the most frightening scenes I’ve ever played in a video game, accomplishing a lot in a short amount of time.

Nate On A Train

For as often as Naughty Dog is lauded for its ability to create playable Hollywood blockbuster films, there’s no game that exemplifies that as much as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

I don’t think there are many actually, legitimately perfect games, but Uncharted 2 is one of them. Naughty Dog was untouchable in this era, and the opening of this game is them firing on all cylinders.

The way it shifts between character, action, suspense and gameplay is almost unheard of even today. Escaping the train, then wandering through the insanely impressive snow physics as the truth about how Nate ended up here slowly unfurls itself is fantastic.

It feels like it wraps up all the kinetic energy of a James Bond opening with the stunning cinematography of a classic Hollywood adventure film.
