For those who didn’t play the original Kirby Air Ride, you may have heard that the real draw of both that game and Kirby Air Riders is actually the City Trial mode. There’s certainly some truth to that, and City Trial is definitely the first mode I booted up. That said, it wouldn’t be fair to completely disregard the other major game mode, Air Ride. It’s in the title, for goodness’ sake.

Where City Trial is a chaotic battle royale on a single map, Air Ride is more akin to a traditional kart racing game, albeit still incredibly chaotic. Unlike in City Trial, you can pick your Machine before the match and can’t change it during, so you need to put a little more thought into what you’re riding than you may otherwise. With that in mind, these are the Machines that you may have a better time riding upon if you’re specifically playing Air Ride. Or at least you will, after you unlock them.

One major element that differentiates Air Riders from other kart racers is its greater emphasis on aerial movement. Nearly every unlockable track in the game has a surplus of ramps to glide off of, and depending on your Machine, you may be able to fly straight up. One of the baseline gliding-specialized Machines is Winged Star.

A holdover from the original Air Ride, Winged Star is all about gliding over everything else, and I do mean everything. It’s not that fast and it doesn’t turn that well. Why would you want to use it in a racing mode like Air Ride, then? Because its true potential unlocks when it’s in the air. When Winged Star is airborne, it becomes much easier to control, not to mention faster.

Racing with Winged Star does require you to be a bit more attentive to the terrain, constantly staying vigilant for ramps and cliffs you can go gliding off of. Any opportunity you see to get in the air, you take it, and if you can help it, never ever come down.

If you’re finding Winged Star to be a little bit too slow or unreliable on the ground, there are other gliding-focused Machines with a slightly better spread of stats that are still race-viable. One good example is Jet Star.

Jet Star has a similar vibe to Winged Star, in that it does its best work while airborne. However, Jet Star handles a little differently in the sky. Where Winged Star becomes more maneuverable, Jet Star starts rocketing forward with even greater speed. If you hit a ramp on a straightaway, you’ll take off, especially if you’re paired with a good aerial Rider like Starman.

Jet Star also handles a little better on the ground, so you don’t need to be quite as vigilant for ramps to take, though you should still endeavor to stay up in the air as much as you can. Also, remember that greater aerial speed means less cornering, so you might end up faceplanting on an invisible wall or flying off track if you’re not careful.

One of the basic techniques the game drills into you in the tutorial is the sliding Boost Dash. You start charging as you approach the corner, then let it loose the moment you round it to come flying out the other side. If you think you’re a hotshot with this particular maneuver, the best Machine to prove it on is the Turbo Star.

Turbo Star is a bit of a problem child amongst its fellow Machines in that, when it’s at a standstill, its charging ability more or less vanishes. Inversely, when it’s moving fast, its charge also becomes lightning-quick. Ergo, to make Turbo Star really work for you, you need to become a master of sliding Boost Dashes, carefully timing every corner to get the most boost action possible.

If you’re skilled with Boost Dashes, Turbo Star can become one of the fastest Machines in the game. You have to be very careful not to crash, stall, or otherwise get stopped, though, because once you do, it’ll take ages for Turbo Star to get in gear again.

Smooth And Reliable

10 Best Machines for Air Ride in Kirby Air Riders

As I mentioned, Kirby Air Riders can get pretty hectic and chaotic at the best of times. That’s part of what makes it uniquely fun, of course, but it can be a little off-putting if you’re not used to it. If you’re crashing all over the place in your Air Ride races and want something a bit more reliable, give the Chariot a try.

The Chariot is the baseline version of one of the new vehicle types introduced in Air Riders. It rolls around on the ground on two wheels, which give it both a firm grip on the track and impressive turning and cornering ability. If you’ve been having trouble making tight turns and Boost Dashes, Chariot is a beginner-friendly Machine that will give you the overall handling ability you need to even the odds.

That’s definitely good, because Chariot’s top speed, unfortunately, isn’t anything to write home about. You can win races with this thing, but you’ll have to do it through skilled navigation of terrain and corners rather than picking up speed on a straightaway.

If even the Chariot doesn’t provide responsive enough turning for your playstyle, I’d say you’re a little too greedy for your own good. Rather, I would say that if there weren’t another ground-based Machine with an even tighter turn radius available: the Wheelie Scooter.

One of my personal favorite Machines from the olden days, the Wheelie Scooter is the lightest Wheelie-type Machine available, a stylish little one-wheeled minibike. Everything about the Wheelie Scooter is designed to be accessible and user-friendly, from its peppy acceleration to its incredibly tight turn radius. It’s not the fastest Wheelie Machine, but all of that extra turning and reduced startup helps it to get into the thick of things in a hurry.

When I say “tight turn radius,” though, I really mean it. The Wheelie Scooter has one of the fastest, tightest charges in the game, so fast that it can actually stop you early if you try to do a normal sliding Boost Dash. It can still do them, but you have to wait until the very last second to get a good boost going, rather than sliding into the corner a second or two beforehand.

So you’ve had some fan day-tripping with the Wheelie Scooter, but you’re hankering for a little more muscle under the hood? Well, much like a high schooler graduating from a scooter to their first motorcycle, it might be time for you to move on up from the Wheelie Scooter to the full-sized Wheelie Bike.

The Wheelie Bike is conceptually similar to the Wheelie Scooter, a ground-rolling one-wheeled vehicle. While not quite to the same extent as the Scooter, the Wheelie Bike has solid charging, turning, and traction stats, as well as a slightly higher top speed. It’s not quite as good at cornering, but it does pick up more speed on a straightaway, better for full-on drag races in the middle of an Air Ride course.

Wheelie Bike is also a more robust vehicle than Wheelie Scooter, with a much higher weight stat. This helps to keep it firmly grounded on the track and makes it harder for opponents and hazards to knock you out of the way. Just remember that, like all wheeled Machines, Wheelie Bike can’t fly, so don’t bother going off of ramps.

Tank-type Machines are another new type of vehicle introduced in Kirby Air Riders, hovering above the ground while moving and switching to treads while charging up. The base Tank Star is a little too slow to be an ideal choice for Air Ride. If you want to win a race in a tank, you have to go all the way with it, committing to power and muscle. In other words, it’s time for the Bull Tank.

Bull Tank is one of the largest, heaviest vehicles in the game, an absolute monster that plows down the track and knocks obstacles out of the way with its hefty plate armor. Like Tank Star, it switches to its treads when you’re charging up, allowing you to keep moving in your current direction while choosing another direction for a Boost Dash. The big difference is that Bull Tank has a frankly absurd top speed stat. It takes a moment for it to get going, but once it does, nothing short of a solid wall can hope to stop it.

Like heavy characters and karts in other racing games, Bull Tank does require some practice to really get good with, as you’ll need to get a feel for the speed and weight. Just remember to charge up when you come to those corners, and you should get the hang of it.

Everyone has different standards when it comes to vehicles. One driver might like a sleek muscle car, but another may prefer a hearty, reliable cube. That’s the best way to describe Wagon Star, actually; a hearty, reliable cube. Or maybe it’s supposed to be a portable shrine. I’m not really sure.

You’ll swiftly notice Wagon Star’s defining characteristic the first time you use it: it can’t charge up at all. No standing Charge Boosts, no sliding Charge Boosts, nothing. The trade-off here is that Wagon Star has generally high-quality stats. It’s got good top speed, reliable turning and grip, and a robust constitution that’ll keep you on the track. It’s a little too heavy to fly, but hitting a ramp will still give you a slight speed boost.

Wagon Star’s lack of charging ability does mean you can’t go rocketing off from a standstill like you would on most other Machines. You’ll have to just let it accelerate and pick up speed on its own, as well as tackle corners manually. You can still use your charge as a handbrake, though, so you can tackle corners without bleeding too much speed.

Inversely to the Wagon Star or Bull Tank, Paper Star is what you get when you opt for a vehicle that is as light as a loose piece of paper fluttering in the wind. If you’re the kind of player that prefers light characters to heavy ones in kart racers, Paper Star is the Machine for you.

Paper Star’s light constitution costs it a bit in the top speed department, but in exchange, you get some exceptionally spicy acceleration and boosting power, enough to absolutely fly off the starting line. It’s also got superb turning and grip, and enough flying power to rival even Winged Star.

Paper Star is the perfect blend of speed and control, with only one noteworthy weakness: it’s very fragile. Since you don’t have an HP bar in Air Ride mode, you don’t need to worry about getting wrecked, but the Machine’s light weight does mean attacks from opponents will send you flying. If you want to ride Paper Star, you ride to outrun, not to fight.

Meet Any Situation

If you’re having trouble deciding between Star-type and Wheelie-type Machines, you technically don’t have to pick. There’s a Machine that embodies the best qualities of both types, allowing you to pick whichever one works for you in the heat of the moment. With a dramatic transforming motion, it’s the Transform Star.

Transform Star, as the name implies, has the ability to hot-swap between two configurations, occurring whenever you perform a Quick Spin. In its Star mode, it hovers along the ground and becomes much easier to control in the air. Shift to Bike mode, and you gain stronger boosts, faster charging, and better turn and grip. You can swap modes whenever you like, though it does take one or two seconds for the transformation to complete.

Notably, no matter which mode you’re in, Transform Star’s top speed stays the same, so shifting modes won’t affect how fast you’re currently going. Give yourself enough leeway to transform before you actually need to so you can take advantage of Star mode on a ramp or Bike mode on a corner, and you’ll handle either perfectly.
