Metroidvanias have exploded in popularity in recent years, and it seems like the genre gains more and more fans by the day. These games place a heavy emphasis on exploration and discovery, giving players an addictive sense of freedom that can seldom be found anywhere else; that being said, the best Metroidvanias are the ones that don’t make you go at it alone.
Co-op Metroidvanias give you everything the genre is known for and then some, allowing players to share the joy of exploration with their friends and family. The genre may have started out being known for its solitary adventures, but a growing number of developers have begun to wholeheartedly embrace co-op gameplay, with some even going so far as to add brand-new co-op features to their older games.
Whether you’re spelunking through ancient ruins, escaping twisted labyrinths, or blasting your way through alien planets, these co-op Metroidvanias are proof that two (or more) heads are always better than one. These Metroidvanias are best tackled together, so call up your friends, grab a controller, and get ready to experience some of the best co-op experiences the genre has to offer.

If you grew up playing games like Castlevania and Metroid and are craving that same retro appeal, then Pampas and Selene: The Maze of Demons should be at the top of your wishlist.
Pampas and Selene: The Maze of Demons is a love letter to the classics, featuring retro 8-bit visuals and nostalgic tracks that can transport any gamer down memory lane. This game will put you (and a friend) in the shoes of Pampas and Selene, two fledgling heroes following in their parents’ footsteps to save the world. You’ll need to explore a massive haunted castle filled to the brim with monsters and rogue Greek gods alike, so you’ll need all the teamwork you can get if you want to take down the ultimate villain.
This retro-inspired Metroidvania offers both online and local co-op, so no matter where your friends are, you can take down monsters whenever. Plus, you can always teleport to each other at any time, so getting lost won’t be an issue here (unless you’re both directionally challenged, in which case, you’re doomed). This game proves that no one can save the world alone, and sometimes, heroes are just better in pairs.
9 Робот по имени Бой!
The Perfect Roguevania for Co-Op

If Super Metroid and a roguelike dungeon crawler had a baby, it’d be A Robot Named Fight!.
This chaotic, procedurally-generated Metroidvania drops you into a world overrun by grotesque, fleshy abominations straight out of a cyberpunk butcher shop. Your mission, which can hardly be done alone, is to take down these monsters and stop their creator, the Megabeast, from spawning more. The Megabeast is a moon-sized mass of eyes, flesh, and teeth that threatens to end all of robot civilization for good, which doesn’t exactly bode well for you and your robo-buddies.
This game allows local split-screen co-op, so if one of your friends feels like helping you save all of robo-kind, then all they have to do is pick up a controller. The second player gets to play as a flying orb that watches the first player’s back, shooting meatbags with laser beams and flying ahead to scout out new areas. While it’s definitely possible to play A Robot Named Fight! solo, it’s highly recommended that a second player join the fight.
8 Wuppo: Definitive Edition
The Cutest Metroidvania You’ve Never Heard Of

Wuppo is one of the best Metroidvanias for those who might be new to the genre, as its Metroidvania elements and mechanics are presented in a way that’s much more digestible for casual players.
It can’t be argued that the vast majority of Metroidvanias are all about demon-slaying and facing the end of the world, but Wuppo was built with a different goal in mind. Instead of fighting the forces of evil against unspeakable odds, you’re just a weird little creature looking for a new home. Playing as a «Wum», a strangely optimistic blob creature, your goal in this game is to travel far and wide to find the perfect place to call home.
Along the way, you’ll encounter everything from charming monsters to ancient conflicts, in an oddly chaotic world filled with political chaos and puzzles. In split-screen co-op mode, you and a friend will be able to tackle the bizarre world of Wuppo together, facing down every ridiculous challenge it throws at you as a team.
7 НЕЗРЯДНЫЙ
Race Against Time Itself

UNSIGHTED is one of those games that sticks with you long after you’ve put it down, and it’s way better when played with a partner.
In UNSIGHTED, you play as Alma, an Automaton who awakens in a world left in ruins after the war with humanity. Survival in a post-apocalyptic world is already hard enough, but you’ll also have to worry about the world’s Anima running out. Anima is a life-giving resource that every Automaton runs on, and without it, they all become mindless, soulless husks whose only goal is to kill and destroy. Every single Automaton you meet, including your old friends and family, is on a literal death timer, and it’s up to you to save them.
Whether you decide to save them all or only look out for yourself is up to you, but co-op mode makes every decision hit a little bit harder. That shared race against time adds a ton of weight to your choices, since every second spent wandering could cost another character their life.
It’ll make getting the ending you want that much harder, since you’ll both need to be on the same page every step of the way. That being said, playing with a friend also makes the story feel that much more personal, as you’ll have to form strategies and work together to save the inhabitants of this dying world.
6 Гуакамеле! 2
All Hail the Chicken Illuminati

If you think wrestling and world-saving don’t mix, Guacamelee! 2 will suplex that idea right out of your brain.
This sequel to the beloved beat ’em up classic brings back everyone’s favorite luchador, Juan Aguacate, for another over-the-top adventure through the Mexiverse. Several years after the events of the first game, Juan is called out of retirement for yet another world-saving quest. You and up to three of your friends will have to jump through time and space itself to defeat a corrupt tyrant on his quest for total domination, and not a single bit of it is as easy as it sounds.
You’ll have to body-slam skeletons, uppercut demonic musicians, and solve reality-bending puzzles as big as the multiverse itself. It’s a good thing you can bring your friends with you in split-screen co-op, because otherwise, you might not stand a chance.
5 Времяверт
Travel to the Past to Save the Future

Timespinner is the only platformer I know where the enemies aren’t only your opponents, but your literal platforms as well.
In this game, you play as Lunais, a young woman whose family is brutally murdered by the Lachiem Empire. Stranded in an unfamiliar world after the destruction of the ancient Timespinner device, you decide to set out on a revenge-fueled quest to return things to how they were, using your power to control time. With your powers, you’ll be able to explore both Lachiem’s past and present, collecting elemental magic orbs and combining their power to create powerful spells.
You’ll also be able to stop time itself for short periods, which will come in handy during battles. You can stop time to evade attacks, sneak up behind enemies, or use your opponents as platforms to reach higher areas. The gameplay only gets more fun with a partner, as they get to take control of your familiar, a mythical creature that can aid the first player in a variety of ways. From breathing fire to healing powers, these player-controlled familiars can make all the difference in a run.
4 Sundered: Eldritch Edition
H. P. Lovecraft Would Love Metroidvanias

Sundered is what would happen if H. P. Lovecraft had a baby with a Metroidvania, and the result is as grotesque as it is amazing.
Inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, this game’s world will chew you up, spit you out, and then chew you up again with its malformed second mouth.
In Sundered, you play as a lone wanderer named Eshe, set adrift in a ruined world filled with mangled monstrosities so twisted they’ll make you wish you were born blind. You’ll face countless monsters and obstacles along your journey, with the world itself almost feeling alive in its desperation to defeat you; the only way out is to harness the power of corrupted relics to strengthen your eldritch powers, but it comes at the cost of your humanity.
You’ll have to constantly fight against enemies both inside and out, as you struggle to maintain your sanity in a world that has none. Whether you decide to resist the dark temptation or embrace it is entirely up to you, but make sure you and your friends are on the same page before doing anything rash.
Having up to three partners by your side is a small comfort in a world like Sundered’s, but hey, help is help, and you’ll need all the help you can get if you’re going to get out alive AND sane.
3 Первичная планета
Dinosaurs, Aliens, Metroidvanias, Oh My!

Primal Planet is the Dinovania none of us knew we needed.
You start off as a humble caveman just trying to survive another prehistoric night, when, out of nowhere, a massive T-Rex attacks you and your family. You become separated from the rest of your cave-family following the attack, and you’ll need to set out on an epic mission full of dinosaurs, megaflora, and ancient aliens if you want to bring them home.
Not all dinos are your enemies, however, and this is proved through your friendship with Sino the sinosauropteryx. Sino is a baby dinosaur who quickly becomes your faithful companion, helping you overcome obstacles, solve puzzles, and take down enemies as he grows up. In co-op mode, a lucky second player will get the chance to actually play as this prehistoric companion, which honestly sounds way more fun to me than playing as a stinky caveman.
2 Соль и Святилище
Less Salt, More Sanctuary

Salt and Sanctuary takes everything you love (and fear) about Dark Souls and compresses it into a beautiful, Soulsvania nightmare you’ll never want to wake up from.
In this game, you play as a sailor on a ship sailing through uncharted waters, with a princess of incredibly high social standing aboard your vessel. What starts off as a standard voyage, however, quickly takes a turn for the worse when a massive sea monster attacks your ship, and everyone aboard is lost to the sea. You wash ashore on a forsaken island crawling with grotesque creatures and unspeakable evils, with corpses of past heroes still clinging to its mossy shores.
Still holding out hope that the princess is alive, you decide that the only way out is through, though you begin to regret your decision the deeper you go. Beneath the island’s wave-battered, salt-worn structures lies a labyrinth of passages that no mortal man could ever hope to escape from, but the real terror lies in what’s hiding in them. You’ll definitely need the local co-op feature this game provides you with; I can’t imagine braving those dingy corridors alone.
1 Месть дикой планеты
Corporate Revenge, Co-Op Edition

Revenge of the Savage Planet is the anti-capitalist Metroidvania masterpiece none of us ever knew we needed until we had it. If you’re looking for a good Metroidvania to play with friends, then you definitely need to get your hands on this game.
Revenge of the Savage Planet takes the quirky charm of its predecessor and cranks it up to eleven, along with the stakes, the worlds, and the weirdness. In this game, you’ve officially been fired from your intergalactic corporate career and have been unceremoniously dumped at the edge of space. With not a crumb to your name and nothing to call your own, there’s really only one thing you can do: start planning your revenge.
You’ll have to hop across every planet in the galaxy and scan every bizarre plant and animal you see, all in the name of sticking it to your former employer. With every new grain of data you collect, you’ll be able to use more and more upgrades, slowly becoming stronger on your noble quest for revenge. It’s by far one of the most unique and entertaining Metroidvanias I’ve come across, but it only gets better with co-op.
You and a friend can get down on some corporate revenge together using online or local co-op, doubling the chaos of every adventure. Whether you’re running from alien creatures or launching each other off cliffs in the name of «science», this co-op Metroidvania proves that revenge is really a dish best served together.
